The Malczewski Butter Lamb, or Baranek wielkanocny in Polish, is a traditional Easter symbol. Started in Buffalo, decades ago by Ma Malczewski in the Broadway Market, The Butter Lamb symbolizes the sacrifice of the Lamb of God in the Eucharist. The Malczewski Butter Lamb comes in many shapes and sizes, with a red "alleluia" flag signifying peace on earth, and a red ribbon representing the Blood of

Christ. You can find this iconic Buffalo tradition at many of your local food stores and the Broadway Market during the Easter Season.

On this Good Friday, Christians around the world remember the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It was the day His body was broken and His blood was shed for the forgiveness of sins.

The butter lamb has long been a meaningful tradition that points directly to Him. Shaped from pure, sweet butter, the lamb represents Jesus as the innocent Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. The red ribbon tied around its neck symbolizes the blood of Christ poured out on the cross. And the small red Alleluia flag it carries quietly announces the victory that was secured through His sacrifice, pointing ahead to the resurrection.

This image of the lamb carrying a flag is known in Christian tradition as the Agnus Dei, Latin for “Lamb of God.” It is one of the oldest symbols of Christ in Christianity, appearing in art as early as the 6th century. The banner (often a white flag with a red cross) represents Christ’s triumph over death and sin, the victory of the resurrection that Good Friday makes possible.

The butter lamb tradition itself ties deeply into the season of Lent. In many Eastern European Catholic communities, dairy products were traditionally given up during the 40 days of fasting and penance. People would churn their cream into butter before Lent began, then shape that saved butter into a lamb for the Easter feast, turning a simple act of fasting into a lasting symbol of sacrifice and new life.

John 1:29 says: “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’”
