Central Brooklyn Food Coop

Central Brooklyn Food Coop The Central Brooklyn Food Cooperative (CBFC) is a Black-led, 100% community-owned and-operated grocery store opening soon. We are a food co-op started by a group of motivated, local activists.

We seek to change the food system for low- to moderate-income members of the Central Brooklyn community. Serving primarily Crown Heights and Bedford Stuyvesant--with some overlap in surrounding neighborhoods such as Brownsville--we seek to place sovereignty over the accessibility of affordable and fresh foods in the hands of the people. We are always looking for more individuals willing to donate

“I Initially [joined the coop back in 2014] to work on access to high quality, affordable fruits and vegetables for my family. Now, the same, but also to build up an enduring, sustainable Black owned institution.”⁣

What does being a member of a Black-led Food Coop mean to you? “Everything! This is how Black folks have historically survived...building up outside of the mainstream that continues to fail us. I want to see myself and my people in the store, the way I don't currently at the other food coop. I want to see the food and products that matter to us, our children learning and being integrated into this healthy food infrastructure, the diversity of Blackness being fully held and represented.” ⁣

- Rae Gomes (she/her), Founding organizing member⁣

Together we raised $2295 to Nourish Black Brooklyn!!! 🎉 HOORAY! Thank you to everyone who donated and supported us in funding CBFC’s store opening! CBFC can’t wait to kick off the new year. See you at the coop!⁣

⁣We are still accepting donations, so if you haven’t had the chance to donate yet it’s not too late!⁣ Donate at http://cbfood.org/index.php/donate/

We have a lot to look forward to in 2021 and it's all thanks to the supportive community investing in Central Brooklyn's Black-led food coop.⁣

“I wanted to join a co-op because I’m interested in more affordable, local, community focused alternatives to the grocery store. It feels really important to be in community with other Black folks continuing the co-op tradition, especially in these times. I can’t wait to see rows of beautiful vegetables in the aisles and the healthy, thriving, vibrant community the store brings together.” ⠀

“I love the Black culture and the overall vibe of central Brooklyn but I've seen it really shift over the 10+ years that I've been here. I think having strong, Black-centered, community-driven institutions is one way that we can fight displacement and preserve that beautiful Black culture we've built over generations.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Being a member of a Black-led Food Coop means I get to see and feel and experience our culture in the place where I spend my money and my time. It means that I don't get to just read about or dream about community care and self-determination, I get to live it every day, right now!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I get images in my mind all the time about what moments in the store will be like - mundane stuff like refilling bulk bins or waiting in line for checkout - but for whatever reason, Tevin Campbell is always playing over the loudspeaker. And that makes me really happy lol.” ⁣⁣

Central Brooklyn, we need you! Help us #HoldDownBK by volunteering to support our emergency food distribution to neighbors on Friday afternoons. Hold Down BK is a multi partnership, community-wide approach to addressing food insecurity in Black, long-term families of Central Brooklyn. Every Friday, we distribute groceries to over 100 residents in Bedford Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, Brownsville, East New York, Downtown Brooklyn, and Bushwick. We need help making calls to residents each week, supporting Brooklyn Packers at the warehouse, driving bags to residents, and delivering groceries door to door. Please sign up here:https://airtable.com/shrd72mN6ARqSgOfZ to volunteer and please wear a mask. If you have any questions, contact our Food Sovereignty Organizer, Shaquana Boykin @[email protected]. Together as a community, we can make sure each grocery bag gets delivered to a neighbor in need. Thank you!

CBFC Statement in Support of Black Lives

The Central Brooklyn Food Coop (CBFC) is a Black-led community project utilizing our collective strength to ensure access to affordable and fresh food for low-moderate income Black people in Central Brooklyn. Our work is rooted in centuries of Black cooperative economics and organizing and is aligned with other movements for Black liberation & self-determination. Many of our members and organizers are a part of movement networks, including the Brooklyn Movement Center (BMC) and the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL), that are working on police accountability, de-carceration, housing insecurity, electoral accountability, and other issues threatening the safety of our community.

The system designed to police and kill us without retribution is the system that has created and sustained poor access to healthy food in our neighborhoods. Food sovereignty, as a goal in itself, is as urgent and life-sustaining as all the other movements to save and liberate Black lives.

We acknowledge this moment, this uprising in the fight for Black lives. As an organization, we will continue our work to establish a sustainable food network for healthy & accessible groceries with our communities in Central Brooklyn. Currently, we are working on the #HoldDownBK emergency food distribution campaign in response to COVID-19. In particular, we invite Black folks in Central Brooklyn to join this work as a concrete way to support our collective health and security during this moment and beyond. If you would like to get involved, please contact, Shaquana Boykin: [email protected].

Mandela Grocery Co-op is a Black-led, worker-owned, grocery, and health food store that opened in 2009. Adrionna Fike, a worker-owner of Mandela Grocery wanted to open a grocery store that catered to African American folks in the neighborhood that would nourish the body, mind, and soul. The food cooperative functions side-by-side with Mandela MarketPlace, a non-profit focused on providing food and health resources to low-income communities in Oakland.

CBFC’s Towards Black Futures study group, session 3: The Black Radical Tradition.
In our third session, we examined histories of Black organizing and radical movement building, and celebrated Black-led food projects as key ways that Black communities have collectively built resources. As a Black-led food coop, we are inspired by how the cooperative tradition has always been connected to the larger struggle for justice in the Black community.

In part 1, we explored our connections and loss to land through story-telling. We drew inspiration from the invaluable contributions of Black Southern land-owners during the 1960’s civil rights movement and Southern-based cooperative legacies such as:

• #FannieLouHamer’s Freedom Farm Cooperative
• New Communities Land Trust
• @FederationofSouthernCoop

In part 2, we studied Black cooperative food traditions in the North and West that took root after the Great Migration, paying homage particularly to urban farming and cooperative legacies in Brooklyn:

• #BlackPantherParty’s Survival Programs
• MOVE’s commitment to growing and sharing food collectively and ecologically
• @Hattie.Carthan Community Garden (Bed-Stuy)
• The East’s Kununuana food co-op (Central Brooklyn)

Mark Winston Griffith, the Executive Director of the @bkmovement, joined to discuss the rich history of Black cooperatives in Brooklyn and how Black cooperative practices are based in pan-African values of collectivism and cooperative economics. He shared his personal experiences with building cooperative movements in Brooklyn, like co-founding the Central Brooklyn Federal Credit Union.

CBFC is committed to continuing in the Black radical tradition of building liberatory Black futures and self-determination, and at the end of the session we considered the following questions:

• In what ways have these projects paved the way for CBFC?
• What values/practices can we learn from these projects and incorporate into CBFC?

If you’re interested in becoming a member of this Black-led project, click the link in our bio to learn more about are values and mission.
