Huge thank you to WUWM 89.7 FM - Milwaukee's NPR for inviting us to the informational session for their upcoming “Seeking Solutions” journalism series focused on hunger and food access. We’re grateful to be part of the conversation and to learn alongside others who are working toward solutions in our community.
There are many different lanes when it comes to improving food access, and we know we are just one piece of a much bigger picture. Our lane is unique: building a stronger, more accessible local food system.
While Farmers Market To Go’s first location is in Brookfield, an area that is fortunate to have strong community support for farmers markets and local food. Here they are helping build a successful first location and creating the foundation by supporting farmers and producers, proving the model, building awareness, and showing what is possible when a community comes together. The long-term vision is bigger. Much bigger.
We want to help make local food more accessible and affordable in more communities with additional locations and even grocery trucks that can go to places that need it most without extensive overhead of a brick and mortar. We believe that by creating more consistent distribution opportunities for local farmers and producers, we can help them grow, increase production, and ultimately make local food available to more people at better prices.
One of the things that makes this model special is that our vendors keep 100% of their profits while sharing the costs of operating the space. Together, we can build a system where local producers have more opportunities and customers have more access to high-quality food.
We know sustainable businesses grow more slowly, but we also feel the urgency. We can’t move fast enough because the need is real.
If you want to be part of this movement, the best thing you can do is shop with us regularly if we’re accessible to you, tell your friends and neighbors about us, and help us grow. Every purchase helps prove that this model can work and every person who joins us helps move this vision forward.
We’re just getting started.
