Tony transplanting cukes....two days after this i sold all my cuke plants at the farmers market...2 days later....most of my cuke plants in the field died....ah, the life of a farmer...so, i sowed seeds where the dead plants were.....squash and cukes don't like to be transplanted...don't like their roots touched...plus, we've had crazy winds....broke many of them...i would have direct seeded them early, but instead started plants early in the hoop house because of the drought...didn't have water in the fields...oh, well!!

Water Today....finally! We'll be planting tons of starts out in the fields in the next couple of weeks....there's alot to do....Come on by...if you need something to do!

05/06/2012

Due to the drought.....we will supposedly...finally be getting water in our ditch the end of next week of beginning of the following week! We will get it once a week, (last year it ran pretty much all day, every day), and it will most likely end completely around July 15th - first of August...Thus, we will have to greatly reduce what we can plant...nothing that matures in July or August or September.....I will try to grow tomatoes in the hoophouse where i have some access to city water though...That's life as a farmer!

The Ditch Project - 150 years of ditches: Boulder's Constructed Landscape - Home

Well, some of the irrigation ditches in the county have had water for a couple of weeks now. Our's (The North Boulder Farmer's Ditch) doesn't. I was told last week that we'd be getting it this week.....Then 2 days ago, I was told i may not get it for a month due to the drought. I thought our's was one of the oldest ditches in the county, and that gives you priority - so i didn't know why others had their water sooo early....Meanwhile, it's getting real old trucking water in a barrel on the back on my pickup, hooking up a hose, using gravity and taking 1/2 a day to water my spinach, radish, carrots and lettuce! So, i put a halt on the planting for now....Ah, the life of a farmer...
Well, i just found out that i should be getting water the middle of next week!!! Whew! I guess our ditch is 11th in priority....anyone interested in Boulder County Irrigation Ditch History....here it is: http://bcn.boulder.co.us/basin/ditchproject/?Home

The Ditch Project is a multi-faceted show with three venues--the Boulder Public Library, the Dairy Center for the Arts, and Boulder Central Park (outside of BMoCA)--from May 9 to July 8, 2009.

Hey....everyone check out my friend, Heidi's FB page....Itty Bitty Farm in the City....and check out her micro San Francisco urban farm! She's a swell gal....We shared an art studio together back in SF before our farming days!

All the irrigation ditches in Boulder County seem to have had water for a week or 2 by now.....except ours. Meanwhile, every other day....I'm trekking my water to the field to the radishes, lettuce, spinach and carrots with a barrel in the back of my truck, hooking up a hose and using a little gravity to get the job done (pics soon to come).....I have got some amazing volunteers this year...Thank God! But, i will gladly welcome more! Anyone got fridays off?? i'd love help with harvesting for Saturday's Longmont Farmer's Market

This year "The Last Stand / Coen Farm" was accepted into the Longmont Farmer's Market. We are really excited about this! Please visit us there on Saturdays!

Also, I am seeking volunteers and one employee (with farm experience) to help with friday harvesting and set-up and sales at the farmer's market!

We are also looking for local schools, i.e. Waldorf, Montisori or church's who would be interested in us setting up a veggy stands there once a week.

And, if anyone is interested in purchasing C.S.A. (community supported agriculture) / weekly food boxes we can work something out!

My tomatoes were sooooo late, so i just pulled 'em up, hung 'em upside down in the barn, and they continue ripening...Still getting tons of tomatoes everyday. We'll have lot's of tomatoe sauce this winter!

10/25/2011

It's gonna freeze wednesday, so i pulled up all the hoses, drip tape, plowed the fields and planted a cover crop. Hopefully, the birds won't eat it this year! Thinking of doing a c.s.a. next year....interested folks can contact me here.

Need to transplant the perennial herbs..that i didn't get planted this summer and put in low tunnel for fall crops...just read you can make a low tunnel with 9 gauge wire curved over and stuck in the ground covered with my shade cloth...i think easier and cheaper that rebar and 1/2 inch poly tubing. thrilling farm stuff, huh!

08/24/2011

Tomatoes!! I won't grow San Marzano's again.....most are rotting on the bottom side of the tomatoe, the Black Prince is a good one...dark, rich and sweet....and my heirlooms...are all green....so i just sprayed 'em with phosphorous to help set the fruit cuz it's getting a little late...

What tomatoes do you all like and have luck growing????

08/22/2011

Started tons of seedlings for the fall on the porch in the shade....lets hope i get' em all before the Sept 20 fall frost date.....Really want more green beans...I was told the only hope was to try to grow some bush beans....they went to fast...sugar snap peas went even fasster!! Gotta get this "succession planting" thing down...planting the same thing every 2 weeks so you got a constant crop!
