Bosque Farms Growers Market

Bosque Farms Growers Market We are a farmers market for local NM growers. We are hoping our work helps local food security and n Everyone helping makes a difference. Give us a try!

Including the usual cash and in support of our mission to help farmers make a living, we have SNAP EBT p-EBT access and Double Up Food Bucks for SNAP EBT p-EBT recipients, participate in the WIC and Five Sandoval Counties farmers markets programs and Fresh RX. A little know fact is that EBT recipients can help their own food sovereignty by purchasing locally grown food plants from our markets wit

h their EBT funds. In today's economy, we see a lot of funds leave our communities. By spending at the local farmers markets, people have a way to change that fact. The above programs are a way to help more people help money circulate back into the local economy. A study done by UNM has shown that farmers markets and programs like the Double Up food bucks helps money circulate in the local economy longer and provides value of $1.80 to every dollar spent at the farmers market. The Bosque Farms Growers Market and the Los Lunas Farmers Market are two of the most affordable local food markets around.

Community resilience 🙂

Farmers markets are more than places to shop — they’re hubs of connection, culture, and community resilience.
Since 2006, FMC has helped markets grow as spaces for fresh food access, fair farmer income, and stronger local economies.

This week, we’re celebrating the movement that continues to nourish communities across the country.

This was from a brief information search. One of the citations was Cornel Coooerative Extension Services. Eating fresh and locally grown can be healthier for you when produce is local and gets to your table soon after harvest.

Nutrient Loss in Produce

Fruits and vegetables start losing their nutrients immediately after being harvested. This decline is influenced by several factors, including respiration and oxidation.

Key Processes Affecting Nutrient Loss

Respiration: After harvest, produce continues to "breathe," breaking down stored nutrients and leading to a loss of texture, flavor, and nutritional value.

Oxidation: Exposure to oxygen causes chemical reactions that degrade vitamins and other nutrients, often visible as browning in fruits.

Factors Influencing Nutrient Retention

Refrigeration slows down nutrient loss significantly.

Time Since Harvest Nutrient levels decrease the longer produce is stored.

Ripeness at Harvest Ripe fruits and vegetables generally have higher nutrient content.

Best Practices for Maximizing Nutrient Value

Refrigerate: Store fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator to prolong their shelf life and slow spoilage.

Minimize Cutting: Avoid slicing produce until ready to eat to reduce exposure to air and light.

Cook Minimally: Use steaming instead of boiling to preserve water-soluble vitamins.

By following these practices, you can help maintain the nutritional quality of your fruits and vegetables for a longer period.
