The Indiana State "Food Police" have put out the word: If you are a home based vendor selling natural fermented products (things like sauerkraut, kimchee, kombucha, kefir, water kefir, pickled vegetables, etc.) we will shut you down!

If you are approached by state or local health inspectors on this issue as you attempt to sell your products at farmers markets, roadside stands or anywhere else, please demand to see the specific section, paragraph and lines of the relevant law and regulation. They cannot legally shut you down for selling other products so do not comply if that is the case! (We've already heard from one vendor today told to shut down and pack up but they refused to comply and continued selling their produce.)

Please forward relevant alleged code violations (law and regs and relevant section, etc.) and we will turn that over to our "Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund team!

Maple Valley Farm is hosting a traditional foods pitch-in dinner with the Bloomington and Indy Weston A. Price Foundation chapters (westonaprice.org) and the Ready Life Co-op (readylifecoop.com) with a regenerative farm tour and herbal plant walk on Saturday, May 17. Arrive as early as noon for set up, meet and greet and announcements. Food is at 1 p.m. followed by tour and plant walk. You're invited! (Dress for rugged hiking)

Hunter Smith to remove red tape for home based vendors and farms. The bill is being held up by Senate Agriculture Chair Sen. Jean Leising.
