> 🍪 Got soft persimmons? Don't toss them — bake them!
>
> This recipe is a family treasure: our Grandma got it from her sister, and she bakes these cookies for us all the time. Running the store keeps us busy, so whenever our persimmons get too soft to sell, Grandma takes them home — and a few days later she shows up with a batch of warm persimmon cookies. They're SO good, we had to share!
>
> **Grandma's Persimmon Cookies**
> You need: 2 very ripe, soft persimmons (pulp) · 1 tsp baking soda · 2 cups flour · ½ tsp each cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and salt · 1 egg · ½ cup butter · 1 cup sugar · 1 cup raisins · 1 cup walnuts
>
> 1. Heat oven to 350°F.
> 2. Stir the baking soda into the persimmon pulp and set aside.
> 3. Sift the flour, spices and salt together.
> 4. Beat butter and sugar until fluffy, then beat in the egg and persimmon.
> 5. Stir in the dry mix, then the walnuts and raisins.
> 6. Drop by teaspoon onto a greased cookie sheet and bake about 15 minutes.
>
> ❄️ Freeze some for later! Persimmons are in season now and a great price. When they get very soft, scoop out the pulp (no skin), mash it, and freeze 1 cup per bag — just right for this recipe. Then bake anytime: at Christmas when persimmons are almost gone, or in summer when you're craving them. Grandma does this every year!
>
> Soft Hachiya works best, or any Fuyu that's gone soft. Persimmons are also great in persimmon bread — search "Natasha's Kitchen persimmon bread" for a great recipe!
>
> Persimmons now at Asian Gourmet Market — $2.99/lb 🍂

🍌 Burro vs. Saba vs. Thai Bananas: What’s the Real Difference?
Ever walked into an Asian or Latino supermarket in North America and wondered what all those strangely shaped bananas are? They look like regular bananas, but cooking with them is a completely different game! Here is everything you need to know about Burro Bananas, Saba Bananas, and Thai Bananas.
📌 The Big 3 Breakdown
1️⃣ Burro Banana (Mexican / Central American "Donkey Banana")
Appearance: Short and stubby with prominent 3-to-4-sided ridges (triangular cross-section).
Flavor & Texture: Tart and firm when green/yellow; sweet with distinct lemon and apple notes when fully ripe (black spots).
Best Use: Dual-purpose! Great for cooking/frying when yellow, or eaten raw when fully ripe.
2️⃣ Saba Banana (Philippine Saba)
Appearance: The "bodybuilder" of bananas—extremely thick, blocky, square-shaped, with a very tough peel.
Flavor & Texture: Highly starchy and firm, with a subtle sweet-potato taste when cooked.
Best Use: Strictly for cooking! Too starchy and tough to eat raw. Essential for Philippine dishes like Turon (fried banana rolls), Banana Cue, and savory stews.
3️⃣ Thai Banana (Kluai Nam Wah)
Appearance: Small, plump, and round, turning bright golden yellow when ripe.
Flavor & Texture: Soft, chewy, and sweet, with a rich floral/fruity aroma.
Best Use: Eating raw or in sweet desserts (e.g., grilled bananas, coconut banana soup).
🔄 Can You Substitute Them?
Burro for Saba: YES, absolutely! If you can’t find fresh Saba in North America, Burro bananas are the best substitute for Turon or fried dishes because they hold their shape and texture under high heat.
Thai Banana for Saba/Burro: Only for sweet desserts. Thai bananas get too soft when cooked under high heat, making them unsuitable for heavy frying or savory stews.
❓ Mystery #1: Why Can’t You Buy FRESH Saba Bananas in the US?
USDA Quarantine Rules: USDA APHIS strictly limits fresh banana imports from Southeast Asia to prevent plant diseases like Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV) and invasive fruit flies.
Shipping & Shelf Life: Long-distance sea transit from Southeast Asia makes fresh bananas spoil easily.
How to Buy: Asian markets (like asian gourmet market) sell Saba bananas frozen (peeled) or as processed goods (banana chips/sauce).
❓ Mystery #2: Are "Thai Bananas" in the US Actually Imported from Thailand?
Most likely NO!
Over 90% of fresh "Thai Bananas" (Nam Wah variety) sold in North American grocery stores are grown in Mexico, Guatemala, or Ecuador. Central American farms cultivate Asian varieties locally to supply the North American market while meeting USDA import regulations. Check the country of origin on the shipping box next time—it almost always says Mexico!

🍂 Persimmon season is here at Asian Gourmet Market!
Did you know there are two kinds — and you eat them differently?
🟠 FUYU (flat, like a tomato): eat it firm and crunchy, like an apple — skin and all. When it gets soft, it's even sweeter.
🟠 HACHIYA (tall, acorn-shaped): wait until it's soft like jelly! A firm Hachiya tastes bitter and dries your mouth. When it's ripe, cut off the top and scoop it with a spoon — honey-sweet.
Crunchy? Pick Fuyu. Soft and sweet? Pick Hachiya.
Most stores carry only one kind — we have both, just $2.99/lb. Come pick yours!
