The Pepper Place Market District includes Pepper Place, the Martin Biscuit Building, and the Ferguson showroom and warehouse. Many other independent businesses have located in the area to enjoy the synergy of an emerging, vibrant design and entertainment district. Formerly the Dr. Pepper Syrup Plant and Bottling Company, the Pepper Place Market District is a group of seven buildings totaling more

than 227,000 square feet. After undergoing extensive renovation, the complex currently houses Birmingham's premier design center as well as the Farmers’ Market, the Terrific New Theater, restaurants, and numerous shops, galleries, and businesses. Sloss Real Estate Company and Cathy Sloss Jones spearheaded this redevelopment and is responsible for leasing and managing the complex. The focal point of Birmingham’s Lakeview Design District, the Pepper Place Market District is among Birmingham's 24 commercial revitalization districts that are subject to design review protection. This highly visible renovation project has been celebrated in numerous newspaper and magazine articles and a CNN television feature.

Then and now.

This corner has become one of the most beloved spots in Pepper Place. Today, it's home to Hot and Hot Fish Club, where the corner table might just be the best seat in the house—unless, of course, you're partial to the bar. Truthfully, there isn't a bad seat.

Looking at these side-by-side photos, it's hard not to appreciate the vision that transformed this former warehouse space into something so full of life.

We love seeing the building's bare bones and imagining what it must have looked like before it was anything more than an idea in Cathy Sloss Jones' mind.

A day at Pepper Place looks a little different for everyone.

For some, it starts with coffee and a walk along the trail. For others, it's where they work, sneak away for a quiet moment in a courtyard or along a walkway, discover a new shop, enjoy a haircut or massage, meet friends for lunch, find inspiration in a showroom, or gather around the table for dinner.

That's one of our favorite things about this district: no two visits are exactly the same.
