Mother bison and herd matriarchs will physically surround calves to shield them from danger, making them incredibly reactive to nearby movement.

Yesterday, the first bison calf of the season arrived! Called red dogs because of their color at birth, their fur gradually turns a dark chocolate brown and their iconic shoulder hump and horns begin to grow after a few months.
