Every vendor you know by name, every booth you head straight to when you walk in — they all had a first Friday once. Someone showed up for them.

Five vendors are new to Belfast this season. This Friday is a good day to go introduce yourself.

Meet Drew with Whale's Road Bakery. He's up before the sun making fresh loaves for your table, and brings all that warmth with him to the market.

Is that a little barn I see on the table? It must be time to "Name the Calf"!

Lauri's looking names beginning with the letter 'O'.

Stop by her spot on Friday and submit your entry. There's a weekly drawing — winner gets 10% off their purchase. The calf gets a name. Everyone wins.

While you're there: grass-fed beef, pork, and — if you're lucky — one of her doughnuts.

Before there were tents, there was a parking lot.
Barbara remembers when the Belfast Farmers' Market was maybe ten vendors on the asphalt outside Reny's — hot enough on a summer day, she says, to cook eggs on the pavement.
John remembers when they'd shut down Main Street once a month for the market. The whole street. Belfast showing up for its farmers.

That was then. This is now: 30-plus vendors, every Friday, May through October, at Waterfall Arts. The market has moved, grown, changed. But Barbara is still here. John is still here. Lohman, who just finished his 31st season with Gardiners Honey, is still here.

Some things are worth showing up for. For decades, these folks have proven it.

In a chilly spring we can look forward to the flowers of a warmer season. Planting time for dahlia tubers will be here soon. Fire Flower Garden has a good variety of dahlias collected over our years of flower growing and bringing tubers and bouquets to market here in Belfast.
