Cedar Brook Homestead LLC

Cedar Brook Homestead LLC Family run homestead offering whole chickens, pork, and other homegrown/homemade items.

It all started with eight laying hens in the backyard of our previous home...this sparked an interest in homesteading and locally sourced foods that has had us building our homestead quite literally from the ground up. From those initial eight laying hens we have expanded to include meat birds, pigs, and registered Nigerian Dwarf goats. We are excited to be in a position this year to share the wealth by making some of our locally raised products available to folks in our region.

🐷🌱 Sitting here gazing as the pigs are grazing! 🌞🐖

Notice in the background the pasture that’s bare soil? 👀 We’re experimenting with a **wagon wheel rotational grazing system** this season. 🚜🌾

Here’s how it works:
🛞 The center “hub” is a sacrificial area the pigs always have access to. This is where they’re fed and watered. 💧🌽
🌿 Surrounding the hub are the “spokes” — separate pasture sections that we rotate through to allow time for grass regrowth and healthier forage. 🌱♻️

We’re excited to see how this grazing method works for our farm over the course of the season! 🐖💚 Stick with us for updates, progress photos, and lessons learned along the way. 📸🌤️

Stuffed pork chops make for a delicious dinner option, and fortunately, we have an abundance of thick, boneless chops available for this specific purpose.

How to prepare: Create a small incision in the center of each chop, taking care not to cut through or compromise its integrity. Fill with your preferred ingredients (this time, we opted for a straightforward pre-made stuffing), although numerous combinations are suitable, ranging from fruits and vegetables to rice, grains, or nuts. Apply dried spices on the outside (we recommend ranch or Nashville hot seasoning mixes), then place the chops in a pan and bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 30-40 minutes, or until the thickest part reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit.

It’s moving day for the first batch of broiler chickens. These 4-week old broilers have been in the brooder house so they can grow and manage their body temperatures through freather growth. Now that they have some 🪶 , they can hit the grass🌱and manage the cooler nighttime temperatures. We will still button up both ends of their coops at night to help maintain heat better at night.

The first chicken 🐔 will be available for Memorial weekend, ready for the BBQ.

Spring training is in full swing. Each spring, we buy piglets and train them on electric fencing behind a hard fence before turning them out onto pasture. A pig's natural tendency when shocked is to run straight forward. Without a hard fence, they will run through the electric (ask me how we know), rendering it ineffective. The hard fence stops them running through and teaches them to turn and run away.
