For some of us, “the frost is on the punkin,” and fall is settling in. However, this Tuesday the Patrick Tavern Market, 4:30-5:30 p.m. is still offering beautiful bouquets to enjoy, along with fall specialties. Ellen’s dahlias continue to put on a magnificent show and she will be offering new Monarch Butterfly cards. Debi’s snapdragons survived the frost, and their stately form and vivid colors last a long time in the vase. Her colorful everlastings are filling in, too.

Cooler weather is great for greens, and Debi’s chard is splendid. I think she’ll still have winter root vegetables and squash as well. Julia harvested tomatoes and her peppers are still going strong; get ‘em while you can! Slice them up for an impromptu pizza on one of Alicia’s pizza crusts; great with soup. Alicia’s selection of sourdough breads - classic, savory, and sweet - always offers tempting surprises.

The Garden Club’s freebies are now down to big, healthy houseplants; they’re indoors in Patrick Tavern, by the utility sink. You’ll thank yourself in winter for getting one or two of these, all easy keepers, to brighten up your house. While you’re there, check out the display “Our Home;” it will soon be time for the monthly change-out. Come back on Friday, 7:00-8:00 p.m. to see the 1793 building by lamplight, at “A Revolution in Illumination,” by Brian Chappell. And be sure to stop by Northville Arts in King Ferry, 9 a.m to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24th, for “Coffee and Collectables,” benefitting popular vendors the San Pedro Sister Community.

This Tuesday the Patrick Tavern Market, 4:30-5:30 p.m. (note fall hours) celebrates the flowers as well as produce of early fall. It won’t be long before we find that

Our summer made her light escape

Into the beautiful.

So let’s enjoy the gorgeous flowers of the season while we still can. In addition to Debi’s brightly colored mixed bouquets, Ellen will be bringing her outstanding dahlias. Summer’s hot weather was trying for many of us, but the dahlias loved it. Ellen’s flower photograph cards also fit nicely in a small frame - a cheerful touch for your home in the winter months - and Debi’s everlasting bouquets will soon be here to dress the table.

Plenty of colorful seasonal vegetables are still filling Debi’s and Julia’s tables. Julia has just harvested the last of her gourmet potatoes: Rosa red skinned, German butter, and Pinto fingerlings, a white and red spotted potato. Fun! Her tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and tomatillos make a colorful mix alongside herbs. Debi’s tables boast a second variety of crisp Asian pears, green beans, carrots (huge!), leeks, bunching onions, beets, and the first of the winter squash, including the esteemed Red Kuri and Honey Boat squash. Fall and winter potato stalwarts from Benlauck Farm include Red Norland, Adirondack White, and Yukon Gold, all good keepers; find them at Linda’s table.

Alicia always has an outstanding selection of sourdough breads, whether classic, savory, or sweet. Her pizza crusts make for a quick and delicious meal, or sometimes just eaten on the spot as an after-work snack; they’re that good! There will be San Pedro Sister Community fair-trade chocolate bars and maybe more. Watch for Mary Ellen’s notice or just come on by!

The market recently had a request for apples; we’ve had some, thanks to Ron, but the spring frosts hit the earlier varieties pretty hard. Later varieties are coming in now, however. What’s your favorite? What are you looking for: apples for fresh eating, for baking, or? Feel free to write to [email protected] with your preferences.

And FREE; do I have your attention? There are some lovely plants left over from last week’s Garden Club Plant Sale; perennials are along the stone wall, houseplants near the door. Would you like to make a donation to the Garden Club SCCS scholarship? Someone will assist you. And of course, also free: the Patrick Tavern display “Our Home” will be open for a self-guided visit from 4:30-5:30 p.m. too. It’s all at the Patrick Tavern Market!

09/28/2026

This Tuesday the Patrick Tavern Market, 4:30-5:30 p.m., teams up again with the Southern Cayuga Garden Club, which will be selling member-grown perennials. All sales benefit their scholarship to a SCCS senior!

Ron is bringing his new batch of Bee Soothe comfrey salve, along with Italian plums, Gala apples, and of course his full line of honey and bee products. Alicia’s selection of sourdough breads, whether classic, savory, or sweet, is terrific, with new and varied flavors week by week: each one a winner. Don’t forget her pizza crusts for a quick and delicious meal, topped with some garden bounty.

Speaking of garden bounty, Julia’s stock of heirloom tomatoes is dwindling, so be sure to stock up; San Marzano and cherry tomatoes are still going strong, along with peppers, eggplants, tomatillos, and fingerling potatoes. On Debi’s table, find juicy grapes, crisp Asian pears, green beans, carrots (huge!), leeks, bunching onions, beets, and the first of the winter squash, including the esteemed Red Kuri and Honey Boat squash. Don’t forget Debi’s beautiful flower bouquets, and if you need flowers for your special event, text (or call) Debi 315-224-0187 or Julia 315-730-2080 any time.

At Linda’s table, find Thane’s delicious Yukon Gold, Adirondack White, and Red Norland potatoes. There are still some fair-trade chocolate bars from the San Pedro Sister Community on hand; we’re hoping for a restock soon. Finally, the Patrick Tavern display “Our Home” will be open for a self-guided visit from 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Be sure to stop by and shop the Garden Club’s perennials; fall is planting time. It’s all at the Patrick Tavern Market!

This Tuesday, September 15, at the Patrick Tavern Market, 4:30-6:00 p.m., the humble potato takes the starring role. Julia will have tender, gourmet-quality red, white, and purple skinned fingerling potatoes, and from Thane’s Benlauck Farm, the delicious Yukon Gold and Adirondack White join Red Norland at Linda’s table. If you want 5 lb or more of any of Thane’s varieties, call/text Linda at (315) 246-1130.

At Julia’s table you’ll also find a rainbow of tomatoes, from colorful cherries to juicy heirlooms. This is the time to can or freeze, or learn how; it’s easy and so rewarding. At Debi’s table, there will be crisp Asian pears, leeks, bunching onions, beets, the first of the winter squash, as well as bouquets. Ron will be bringing Bartlett pears, apples (three varieties), watermelons, Italian plums, and zucchini, and of course his excellent honey and a range of bee products.

Alicia’s selection of sourdough breads, whether classic, savory, or sweet, is terrific, and her pizza crusts make the base for a quick and delicious meal, topped with some garden bounty. Fair-trade chocolate bars from the San Pedro Sister Community will be on hand; if you’re looking for coffee, nuts, and other products, email [email protected] by Monday evening. Finally, the Patrick Tavern display “Our Home” will be open for a self-guided visit from 4:30-6:00 p.m. It’s all at the Patrick Tavern Market!

"This Tuesday, September 8, at the Patrick Tavern Market, 4:30-6:00 p.m., the spotlight is on our fair-trade source, the San Pedro Sister Community. Cathy will be here in person from 4:30-5:30 pm with chocolate bars, coffee, nuts, and other specialties. If you want to check on a specific item, email [email protected] tonight or Monday.

Alicia’s selection of sourdough breads, along with the ever-useful pizza crusts, is stellar. Whatever bread you choose - classic, savory, or sweet - you’re bound to be pleased. Debi’s Bedlam Gardens will have a full array of summer vegetables - leeks, carrots, green beans, beets, garlic, shallots, lots of herbs, and more - and the first picking of crisp Asian pears. Her flower bouquets are still going strong, and in a few weeks the “everlastings” - dried flowers - will be there to see you through fall and winter with bright color.

At Julia’s table, the tomatoes are coming on full force, from cherry tomatoes to heirloom beefsteaks, in a rainbow of colors. Time to stock up for canning and freezing! If you’re new to this, it’s not hard to put tomatoes up for winter, in any of several ways; just ask.

There won’t be a pick up from Thane’s Benlauck Farm this week, so look for corn and potatoes again on Sept 15th. Of course, the Patrick Tavern display “Our Home” will be open for a self-guided visit from 4:30-6:00 p.m.

Finally, allow me (Linda) a word about this market. I owe a debt of gratitude to the late Wendell Berry, farmer and writer (that’s the order of his accomplishments he’d have liked) for the encouragement his work provided and continues to provide. I invite you to read “The Unsettling of America,” one of those rare books that, at almost fifty years since its publication, becomes more relevant year by year. Many tributes to him have been published; this one, and many more, are visible week by week in varied ways. Thank you, customers and vendors, for being part of the work.

“Eating is an agricultural act.”

Wendell Berry"

"This Tuesday, September 1, at the Patrick Tavern Market, 4:30-6:00 p.m., there will be fruit in abundance. Debi will still have Nova pears (in limited amounts), a European pear for dessert and canning. Julia handles the “other” fruits: cherry tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, and eggplant. Check out their booths for leeks, carrots, green and yellow beans, beets, garlic, shallots, lots of herbs, greens, dried herbs and so much more, too. Don’t forget Debi’s beautiful flower bouquets; if you need flowers for your special event, text (or call) Debi 315-224-0187 or Julia 315-730-2080.

Ron will be back with honey, fruit and vegetables: peaches, plums, Clapp pears, and melons, along with zucchini, cucumbers, and garlic. Clapp’s Favorite pears are a European heirloom variety known for exceptionally sweet, juicy flesh. Some people avoid buying European pears because by the time they “feel” ripe on the sides, they are getting overripe at the core. Don’t deny yourself the pleasure of such a choice fruit! It’s easy to learn how to test ripeness, and if you miss the peak, no worries: just use your favorite applesauce recipe and make pear sauce.

If you want Thane Benson's “Raquel” sweet corn this week, you really do need to order ahead, even if it’s just a couple of ears. Call/text (315) 246-1130 by Monday evening for corn, please. The same goes for potatoes by the 5 # or 10 # bag, which will now be available at a special bulk price on Linda’s table.

Alicia is back with all the great sourdough breads, as well as pizza crusts to top with the vegetables of the season. San Pedro Sister Community’s chocolate bars will be restocked, and there should be a good assortment. Want coffee and/or nuts? Drop a line to [email protected], also by Monday evening.

Inside, the Patrick Tavern display “Our Home” has added some new elements to the display; can you find them? The Bicentennial Quilt is still there to enjoy, too. It’s all this Tuesday, 4:30-6:00 p.m. at the Patrick Tavern Market!"

"This Tuesday, August 25, at the Patrick Tavern Market, 4:30-6:00 p.m., late summer crops take center stage. Thanks to a family picking project on the weekend, Debi will have lots of Nova pears, a European pear characterized by sweet, juicy flesh. Julia handles the “other” fruits: cherry tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, and eggplant. Check out their booths for Debi’s leeks, carrots, green and yellow beans, beets, garlic, shallots, lots of herbs, and of course beautiful flower bouquets. Have you noticed her particularly lovely pastel zinnias? They are a new variety called “Aurora.” Julia has greens, dried herbs and so much more, too.

If you are looking for the kind of zucchini that chefs seek out, and you value produce grown using organic methods, you’ll want to get some from Margaret’s Trinity Farm. What makes them chef-worthy? She picks them small (about 8’’ or less), which is when they are most tender-skinned and least seedy. The difference from “baseball bat” zucchini is night and day; these are really choice. Look for them at Linda’s table, where you can also find Benlauck Farm potatoes and corn.

Because corn is best the fresher it is, please let Linda know in advance how much you’d like, even if it’s just a couple of ears. Call/text (315) 246-1130 by Monday evening for corn, please. No need to order potatoes or zucchini ahead. With luck, there will be a limited supply of chicken eggs on the table, too.

San Pedro Sister Community’s chocolate bars will be restocked, and there should be a good assortment. Want coffee and/or nuts? Drop a line to [email protected] tonight or Monday.

Alicia should be back from vacation, with all the great sourdough breads. Watch for the second notice, through Mary Ellen, or better yet, just come! And don’t forget: if you need flowers for your special event, text (or call) Debi 315-224-0187 or Julia 315-730-2080.

The Patrick Tavern display “Our Home” has added some new elements to the display, along with an intriguing exploration about the possibility of a famous early visitor. The Bicentennial Quilt is still there to enjoy, too. It’s all this Tuesday, 4:30-6:00 p.m. at the Patrick Tavern Market!"

"This Tuesday, August 18, at the Patrick Tavern Market, 4:30-6:00 p.m., the spotlight is on summer fruit. Ron will have a limited amount of blueberries - get there early! - along with cantaloupes, yellow watermelon, Italian prune plums, large plum tomatoes, zucchini, and yellow squash (yes, the last three are fruits too). His latest honey is Basswood, also known as Linden, a very floral honey. He’ll also have candy onions and beets.

Debi adds to the fruit line-up with Nova pears, a European pear characterized by sweet, juicy flesh. Julia handles the “other” fruits: cherry tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, and eggplant. Check out their booths for Debi’s leeks, carrots, green and yellow beans, beets, garlic, shallots, lots of herbs, and of course beautiful flower bouquets. Julia has greens, dried herbs and so much more!

Does all that sound great but you’re not sure where to start in the kitchen? We’ve got that covered. The last couple of weeks, Julia has had some delicious, easy-to-make garden dips to sample; this week, Debi will bring a bean salad to sample. It’s so nice to leave the market with some ideas and an easy recipe or two - not to mention the fun of sharing new tastes with friends.

And it’s corn season, of course. Linda brings delicious “Raquel” sweet corn from Benlauck Farm. Please let her know in advance how much you’d like. Yes, it’s fine to order one or two or four ears; it helps her to know how much to buy, because fresh is always best. Call/text (315) 246-1130 by Monday noon for corn, please. The red and white potatoes are also a treat for the summer classics of salt potatoes and herbed potato salad.; no need to order potatoes ahead.

Stop by Linda’s table, too, for San Pedro Sister Community chocolate bars and fair-trade tea, too. And may I remind you, if you need flowers for your special event, text (or call) Debi 315-224-0187 or Julia 315-730-2080.

The Patrick Tavern display “Our Home” has added some new elements to the display, so stop in to see what’s new, along with a handout of “Seven Little Stories.” It’s all this Tuesday, 4:30-6:00 p.m. at the Patrick Tavern Market!"

This Tuesday, August 11, at the Patrick Tavern Market, 4:30-6:00 p.m., the spotlight is on Alicia’s sourdough breads. She will be on vacation next week (Aug. 18), so she invites you to get an extra loaf this week to freeze. Bread freezes beautifully, and if you take a minute to cut your loaf in halves or quarters before wrapping/bagging individually for the freezer, you can pull out just what you need. She’ll also have sourdough English muffins, another great item to keep on hand in the freezer.

“Raquel” sweet corn from Benlauck Farm is ready! Please place an order for this popular item. We will try to have a little extra on hand, but to save disappointment, text Linda at (315) 246-1130 with your order. (It’s $0.60 an ear, so $1.20 for two, $3.60 for six, and $7.20/dozen.) Thane’s red and white new potatoes are available too, still in the “B” and “C” sizes, so nice for salt potatoes and salads. At Linda’s table, you can also find chicken eggs, San Pedro Sister Community chocolate bars, and Ron’s honey (just ask).

Debi’s fresh French filet beans and yellow Roma-type beans were delicious last week, with more on the way. She suggests that it’s a good time to make dilly beans: dill and garlic are also ready. Freeze some dill for pickling other crops later on, too! If dilly beans sound good but you’ve never made them, just ask Debi; it’s easy, and what a treat they are in the winter. Julia’s bell peppers are abundant and the cherry tomatoes have just started. Lots more on both tables! Don’t forget, Debi’s bouquets are always gorgeous, so if you need flowers for your special event, text (or call) Debi 315-224-0187 or Julia 315-730-2080.

The Patrick Tavern display “Our Home” has added some new elements to the display, so stop in to find out more. Pick up the handout of “Seven Little Stories,” too. It’s all this Tuesday, 4:30-6:00 p.m. at the Patrick Tavern Market!

"This Tuesday, July 28, at the Patrick Tavern Market, 4:30-6:00 p.m., Debi will have first-of-the-season beans, green and yellow, in limited quantity. Julia’s peppers are looking great: bell is sweet and shish*to mildly hot. New potatoes from Benlauck Farm are a treat; find them at Linda’s table.

Alicia’s sourdough breads and special loaves are outstanding, and her pizza crusts can be the basis of many quick and tasty meals. Debi’s new-crop garlic, shallots, chard, basil, sage, dill, oregano, are all great for quick garden pizzas or herb flatbreads, and iced mint tea is so refreshing (applemint, wintergreen, mojito, and chocolate mint). Julia expands the lineup with popular new kales, more fresh herbs, and herb blends.

Ron’s honey from this season is now available; ask at Linda’s table, where you will also find San Pedro Sister Community’s fair trade chocolate bars, Breakfast Blend Coffee in a larger, more economical size, and tea.

Debi’s bouquets are always gorgeous; bring the summer inside! And if you need flowers for your special event, text (or call) Debi 315-224-0187 or Julia 315-730-2080.

Indoors, the Patrick Tavern display “Our Home” has just undergone its first updating. The "College Home” corner now features the story of how the little early house now known as the “Paul Jones House” was saved a century ago, and the map sequence that begins with two images held by the Cayuga Museum now continues with maps of the Military Tract through 1795. Can you find your property on it? Find out this Tuesday, 4:30-6:00 p.m. at the Patrick Tavern Market!"
