At Hurdwell, you won’t be surprised that every cut in the meat case has a local story behind it — and this week, that story comes from rural Arlington, where Bill & Angie Bateson have built more than a cattle herd…they’ve built a family legacy.

The Batesons fell in love with Shorthorn cattle years ago after being introduced to the breed by fellow farmers in Indiana. It wasn’t just the iconic red-and-white coloring that caught their eye — it was the calm temperament, strong genetics, and the kind of stewardship that turns farming into a lifelong calling.

Their herd was built around a special cow named Fancy, a reserve grand champion from the Iowa State Fair who became the cornerstone of the farm and raised nine beautiful heifers over her lifetime. Around here, those stories matter. Because local beef isn’t just about what’s on your plate — it’s about generations, grit, and families pouring their hearts into agriculture every single day.

Bill & Angie wear a lot of hats in our community — from public service to small business ownership — but at the center of it all is still the farm, the cattle, and the belief that raising food the right way matters.

Meet Katie Kramer, founder of Hurdwell Market and a passionate advocate for local agriculture, transparency, and knowing exactly where our food comes from.

What started as a search for high-quality local meat turned into a mission to connect Ohio families with Ohio farms. At Hurdwell, every cut we offer is locally sourced, never frozen, and raised without hormones or antibiotics. In most cases, the farms we source from are within 30 miles of our shop, close enough that you can drive past the pastures yourself.

We believe people deserve to know who raised their food, how it was cared for, and where their dollars are going. Through whole animal butchery and partnerships with local farmers, we’re proud to help bring more transparency back to the table.

This is more than a butcher shop to us - it’s community, stewardship, and a radically traditional way of doing things.

It will be pleasant one of these days and ideal for grilling, making it an opportune time to conduct a freezer inventory and schedule beef orders for the summer grilling season if needed.

In livestock operations, fostering relationships is crucial, and one key relationship we prioritize is with the processing facility where we deliver our animals.

Over the past few years, finding a reliable, trustworthy, and safe environment has been challenging, but we, as producers, have found Hurdwells to meet all our criteria.

Now, after several years of working with Hurdwells, it is reassuring to have found a suitable partner for our customers as well; messages like these reinforce our confidence that our customers are also welcome.
