On this day in 1883, Mount Augustine’s north face collapsed into the sea we call Cook Inlet / Tikahtnu. The resulting debris avalanche triggered a localized tsunami that sent 20-foot waves into coastal Alaskan communities. At the English Bay trading post near Nanwalek, witnesses recorded four distinct waves traveling at 30 mph through Cook Inlet.

Because a local tsunami in Cook Inlet leaves almost no time to react, the National Tsunami Warning Center team doesn't treat Augustine like a standard seismic threat. We've developed a specialized procedure for this specific volcano—working in lockstep with the Alaska Volcano Observatory and USGS Volcanoes to rapidly detect flank collapses and issue warnings before the first tsunami wave hits Kachemak Bay, Homer, and surrounding villages.
