Bundle up for our 5 am trip to the market wth the yellow van, blue tractor and pumpkin loaded trailer.
Yesterday and today... tomorrow is our last Saturday Market , it will frost tonight so the yellow van can be loaded during the day .if it is kept in the shade. No need to put lugs of anything in a cooler.
1. 15 quart bags of nuts were made, we have another full lug of nuts to bag for tomorrow's market . They are in the locked gray cooler. When bagging look for any that have splits, holes, or are too small to use. Screening the nuts you bag is the most important issue.
2. pick cilantro : cut them at the gound so it is as long as possible. Last week ( a very successful week) the cilantro had not been bundled : customers made their own.) Cut a full lug.
3. If we have " time and energy" to pick good arugula leaves and leave them loose in a lug.
4. Cut a lug of flat and curly parsley
5. bag 5 more bags of potatoes 7lbs for $5.
6. Put all the pumpkins left in the trailer now . Put two lugs of butternut and acorn squash in the trailer too ( just so much easier than stacking them in the van. after climbing up into the van. )
7. Use a towel to make the squash cleaner.
8. pack wreaths two in a lug. Put in the van.
9. The flowers tomorrow will be on one table and there will be no bouquets.
10. Pull a lugfull of scallion bunches: do not pull the bunches apart, do not grab them and pull, use a spade to loosen them . We do not have a power washer (it is stored at s. prospect st basement out of frost) So trim the roots, swish , brush the bottom Put a rubber band 10" up from the roots on each bunch. and lay them in a lug.
11. Make 4 lb net bags of onions ..all of them.
12. pick any broccoli we have for the market: there is no cauliflower yet .
The john deere tractor will be towed by Bob to his garage in Chicopee on Sunday: it is overheating, runs as if the brakes are on, the battery light is on and the rear hydraulics only sometimes work.
All this occured at once! As a result we will simply disk down what is left in the field and sow rye over all.
We also can't spread manure without it so I will put off getting it delivered till we are sure we can spread it.
The chestnuts are done , they may continue to drop but so are the leaves even a drone would have trouble finding them.
Yesterday afternoon Shiela Wu visited while I napped. I hope she took a bag or two of our Norland potatoes that she planted. Sheila's sister, who lives in the Philippines ,was with her. I woke to find a bunch of packages of Cebu dried mango on the kitchen table. Chewy treats the house loved. One of those times I wish I had been awake. Thank you for helping us and thank you for visiting.
Plan on coming for a week ( or longer) next spring....
IMG_6760.JPG our tomatoe and flower stakes as stored for the winter at the Fearing st barn: they are hardwood and last forever if they are kept dry.
Also , any pile at the farm is a home for chucks. That means the pile would be a mess, since Clover hunts.
