💚 ALIQUIPPA, WE DON’T HAVE TO WAIT FOR PROSPERITY TO TRICKLE DOWN. WE CAN BUILD IT TOGETHER.

A recent article from Next City challenges the idea that economic prosperity will eventually reach every community on its own.

At the Aliquippa Food Co-op, we believe our community deserves more than waiting. We deserve the opportunity to participate, invest, and help shape our own economic future.

That’s why we’re building a community-owned grocery store.

🛒 Expanding access to fresh, healthy food.
🤝 Creating opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs.
💼 Supporting jobs and economic activity.
💚 Giving residents a meaningful stake in a community asset.

The cooperative model is about more than buying groceries. It’s about bringing people together around shared needs and shared ownership.

When we invest together, we build together.

Aliquippa’s future is worth building—and every one of us has a role to play.

When regional investments are made, how do we know who benefits?
Gross Regional Product is the standard way of expressing conventional economic impacts at the regional level. Social Return on Investment (SROI) is used as a way of referring to and quantifying the social value that conventional models fail to capture, but that residents experience most directly.
In the Active Economy, the chief goal of development is to ensure both GRP and SROI are created in ways that primarily benefit local communities – particularly those historically characterized by worse economic, social, and environmental outcomes.
For Allegheny and Beaver Counties, the Active Economy Report found that a portfolio of 21 projects are projected to produce $845 million of GRP and an additional $123 million in Social Return on Investment over 20 years.
Dive into the report and learn more about how our economy can work in service to strengthen our communities (link in comments).

🛒💚 WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD A CO-OP THAT LASTS?

A recent article from Garlic and Roses reflecting on a half-century of cooperative retail offers an important lesson for the Aliquippa Food Co-op:

Cooperation is built for the long haul.

Food co-ops that have lasted 50 years didn’t simply open their doors and stay the same. They grew, reinvented themselves, stayed connected to their communities, and remained focused on serving their members and shoppers.

A few lessons stand out:

🌱 Stay connected to your purpose.
Know what makes your cooperative meaningful to the community—and keep that purpose at the center.

🤝 Build relationships.
Co-ops don’t have to figure everything out alone. Learning from other cooperatives, sharing experiences, and building strong partnerships can help a new co-op avoid mistakes and accelerate its progress.

🛍️ Make service a priority.
A cooperative is ultimately about people. Creating an experience where members, shoppers, producers, and community partners feel valued matters.

🔄 Grow and reinvent.
Communities change. Markets change. A successful cooperative has to evolve while remaining grounded in its founding values.

💚 Think beyond today.
The goal isn't simply to open a grocery store. It's to build a community institution that can serve Aliquippa for generations.

That is part of what makes the Aliquippa Food Co-op so exciting.

We are building something with our community—not simply for our community.

A grocery store by us.
For us.
Built together.

If you believe in the power of community ownership, there is a place for you in this story.
