I so desperately want this page to survive but I think we need to broaden the topic to off grid living concepts in this day and age.

The snowpocolypse showed us that we have much work to do here in central Texas if we are going to be able to effectively “weather” the climate change extremes that are being predicted in our future.

So- I am not going to change the name of this page at the point, but I am going to attach a group to it that focuses on community discussion about off grid concepts for our area. It may also cover bartering systems and local economy stuff. We have been bingeing on passive housing systems including earth ship technologies for the past couple of years off and on and are feeling the pull towards implementing what we can. My hope is to start a conversation on our central Texas community about how to implement all sorts of mechanisms that can help our energy consumption as individual households even if getting off grid is not an option or of particular interest to you. Central Texas has its unique concerns and so it will be through that lens I will gather info.

Our story:

We have an old ranch house built in the 20s with box frame construction in Lampasas County that we want to retrofit. At the same time we have land in Terlingua that we want to build on using total off grid systems.

Coinciding with this new group I may try to start a Facebook channel where I post the videos we have found on YouTube....or I may just do it here. There are a lot of helpful videos out there if you can wade through the crap. I am going to try to sift through that for you.

Gosh the weather is wonderful today. If only we had this every day. Lol. But we don’t- so let’s see what we can do to prepare for the worst in summer and winter by fortifying our space. I am going to send out as many invites as I can, so watch for the new group. Not sure what to call it yet!

Please share to those whom you think will enjoy being part of the convo.

I’m hoping to create access to area producers here- anyone have any local organizations they are buying food from? It is so important right now to create local food chains.

Also, as we consider moving our Bistro into the specialty grocer market (as a side), we really want to support local. So if you know anyone vending small packaged products available for commercial sale please hook them up here!

We have fresh organic summer squash available in our café starting today for $1 per pound. Non organic squash at a Walmart is 1.23 a pound, so it is a steal!

Come buy it from us so we don’t have to watch pounds and pounds of beautiful fruit go to waste! Lol. I can only freeze so much!

I am looking for basil. Anyone growing some and will have extra cuttings they want to sell on an ongoing basis? Lampasas area is preferential but can consider 183 south towards Austin. Message me please and thank you!

I am not an alarmist. But I am interested in preparedness. There really is no need to stockpile. There are many local providers out there ranching and farming food for consumers in the area.

Frequent your local meat market instead of grocery stores that are part of national supply chains whenever possible and do your homework- reach out to providers in the area- there is everything from beef, chicken and pork, to fruits and garden veggies being grown here.

Our biggest issue at our home is finding ways to save the produce that is all getting ready at the same time.

Please like and share this page to get the word out about the need to source locally. We need people posting about farms and ranches they know about as well as good food preservation methods and unique ways to use things like squash- we have a ton of it right now!

We have added a new feature to gotexan.org! Now, more than ever, it is important to support local Texas farmers and ranchers. This new page lists farmers and ranchers that sell directly to the public. Head on over to this page to see who is selling in your area!🤠
