What We Do

We focus on areas where trees can make the greatest difference.

Through large-scale tree planting and close collaboration with communities across Somalia, we help create sustainable opportunities for people to grow food, generate income, and restore natural ecosystems — building a greener, more resilient future together.

Somalia's forest situation today is a serious environmental concern, especially because the country already faces frequent droughts, land degradation, and the effects of climate change.

If Somalia continues losing 40,000 hectares of forest every year, the long-term consequences could be devastating for its environment, agriculture, livestock, and future generations.

According to the World Bank, Somalia lost approximately 686,000 hectares of forest between 2000 and 2017, demonstrating that deforestation has been a major problem for decades.

Africa experiences an annual loss of approximately 3.9 million hectares of forest, making it the continent with the highest net deforestation rate globally

In the past, bamboo used to grow in Somalia, especially along the banks of the Shabelle River.

Nowadays, it is very difficult to find bamboo in Somalia.

Recently, we found a place where bamboo is still growing in Somalia.

This tree is known as Cassia, or the Golden Shower Tree.

It is native to Somalia and used to be found almost everywhere in the country in the past.

Unfortunately, today it is very difficult to find these trees in Somalia.

Their numbers have declined significantly due to deforestation.

These trees also grow very well in Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland.

It is believed that they were introduced there from Somalia some time ago, although no one seems to know the exact date or period when this happened.

The propagation and restoration of indigenous plant species such as Terminalia spinosa remain challenging in Somalia, where scientific research and technical information are limited.

This drought-resistant tree has been severely affected by deforestation and overexploitation.

It is commonly sold in local markets and used as a source of timber for house construction, yet very little effort is being made to replant or regenerate the species.

Terminalia spinosa provides several important benefits, including medicinal products, timber, fuelwood, and raw materials for handicrafts.

However, its population is declining due to continued harvesting and the lack of planting and conservation efforts.

Inadequate knowledge of proper seed handling and germination techniques has further limited the domestication and large-scale cultivation of the species.

This situation threatens local livelihoods and restricts efforts toward the sustainable development and restoration of dryland ecosystems in Somalia.

Plant Tamarind. Restore Nature. Protect Biodiversity.

Bisha Cagaaran is campaigning to promote the planting of thousands of tamarind trees, an important native species.

In recent years, tamarind trees have been increasingly affected by deforestation, while too few new trees are being planted.

By planting and protecting young tamarind seedlings, we can help restore biodiversity, strengthen local ecosystems, and create a greener future for generations to come.

Every tree planted is a step toward restoring nature. 🌳💚

Why is the Warsheikh tree important?

The Warsheikh tree is important because it grows very quickly and is highly tolerant of salty conditions.

It can be planted near the seaside, along roads, around houses, and in many other places.

One of its main benefits is the large amount of shade it provides.

The tree matures very quickly and can develop a wide, beautiful shade canopy in less than three years.

Protect Somalia’s Native Indigenous Trees

Bisha Cagaaran works to protect Somalia’s declining native indigenous trees by propagating native species, restoring them, and educating communities about their importance.

Every year, Somalia is losing an estimated 2.5 to 4.4 million native indigenous trees, largely due to charcoal production and deforestation.

These native trees are irreplaceable. Once they disappear, we risk losing an important part of Somalia’s natural heritage, biodiversity, and environment.

That is why Bisha Cagaaran is working to empower communities to protect, restore, and value Somalia’s native indigenous trees for future generations.
