THE RITUAL OF ASHES
The most recognizable feature of the day is the application of ashes to the forehead, usually in the shape of a cross.

2026 OBSERVANCE and RULES
In 2026, Ash Wednesday falls on February 18. While not a "Holy Day of Obligation" (meaning attendance at Mass is not required), it is a day of strict fasting and abstinence for many.
Fasting: For Catholics aged 18–59, this means eating only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not equal a full meal.
Abstinence: Catholics aged 14 and older are required to abstain from eating meat.
Duration: The Lenten season lasts for 46 days in total; the "40 days" refers to the fasting days, as Sundays are excluded because they are considered weekly celebrations of the Resurrection.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The practice evolved from the early church's custom of public penance, where grave sinners were sprinkled with ashes and excluded from the community until Holy Thursday. By the 11th century, the practice of receiving ashes was extended to all members of the congregation to signify universal human frailty and the need for God's mercy.
