The store opened its doors in May 2008 and has since become Auckland's favourite Butcher, offering customers a wide range of gourmet cuts to cater for every taste. Customers can select from a wide choice of pre-packaged products or buy as they need from the service cabinets, with staff always available to offer expert advice. The store is owned and operated by Reuben Sharples, award winning Butcher of over 30 years and managed by Jason Perry, a fourth generation butcher with over twenty-five years’ local experience. Reuben, Jason and the rest of the team provide excellent service in a friendly and professional manner. Whether it be special requests or just giving cooking advice, the team is always ready and willing to help. The team take great pride in their homemade gluten free sausages, which have won numerous medals as well as their award winning hams, which are customer's Christmas highlights! Well. That got away on us a bit.
Well over 130,000 people have read that post, and close to two hundred of you commented. We have read every one.

The question most of you asked. Why the Aussie Butcher, when everything in the shop is New Zealand? Keith is Australian. Same Keith as last time, the head office in the white ute. He came over in 1984 and started it. The name is his. The meat has always been ours.

To the other butchers, the fruit and veg shops, the bakeries and the fish shops who commented, that meant more than all the rest of it put together.

And to those of you who named our team in the comments, we told them. That is the part we will remember.

Katie would like it noted that her scrolls have now been independently verified by a member of the public.

You’ll have seen the supermarket owners explaining their co-operatives. Here’s ours.

We employ twenty people in the summer months. We also employ twenty people in the winter months.

We are proud members of a co-operative. It is called Katie. It is one woman, a car, and a tray of scrolls that arrives at smoko. Every member holds an equal share. There is one member.

Our IT department, our finance team and our communications department share a windowless room next to the mince, roughly the size of a broom cupboard. It contains one laptop.

We do have a head office. He is called Keith, he is eighty, and he does the rounds in a white SsangYong ute.

Still buying whole carcasses and breaking them down here. Still making the bacon, the ham and the sausages in the shop. Still New Zealand meat.

And good on every other small butcher, fruit and veg shop, bakery and fish shop doing the same thing. It’s harder than it looks.
