New Zealand Cherimoyas. Also known as custard apples.
To eat a cherimoya, choose a fruit that is ripe (the skin has changed from bright green to a slightly darker greenish-brown) and yields slightly to a gentle squeeze, similar to a ripe avocado. Cut the cherimoya in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon. Discard the dark brown seeds – do NOT eat the seeds. You can also peel the fruit and cut it into cubes or slices. The taste is light and refreshing, and the fruit has a creamy, delicate, melt-in-your-mouth texture that feels reminiscent of ice-cream.
Nutrition info: Cherimoya offers health benefits from its rich content of fibre, vitamin C, B vitamins, potassium, and antioxidants, which support immune function, digestion, heart health, and skin health.
Origin: A subtropical fruit believed to have originated in the Andes region of Peru and Ecuador.
