Hemp & Co At Hemp & Co, we believe food is medicine. Hemp and Co.'s creation was one of those serendipitous collisions of fate, chance and timing.

Through our brand 'Essential Eats', we offer nutrient-rich hemp foods packed with essential fats & amino acids to support your health, energy, and wellness—one delicious, whole-food meal at a time. It all started in March 2019. I was looking to diversify my sports massage business by providing products. While researching for ingredients I stumbled across hemp. I found a research paper praising the benefits of hempseed oil for the skin, especially dry, flaky, eczema skin. Being post-menopausal my skin had become very dry and cracked so I started taking 2 tablespoons of hempseed oil a day. It had a profound effect on my dry hands, I no longer felt compelled to regularly apply hand lotion. More amazing than this, I begun feeling my digestion improve, my energy was balanced, and the pain in my right shoulder (which I had suffered with for years) was gone! I was converted and excited. I couldn't stop raving about this powerful plant. I told my family and friends about hemp so they could experience the incredible benefits for themselves. And so my small idea to add products to my massage business has grown into endless and exciting possibilities of what I can create through Hemp & Co.

Are you puzzled by the terms PUFA, LA, ALA, omega-6, omega-3, unsaturated fats and essential fats?

Perhaps you’ve heard all of them - or only some - but still can’t quite figure out how they fit together.

In this post, we hope to give you a clearer picture of what these terms mean and how they are connected.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids - PUFAs - are one type of unsaturated fat. The two main PUFA families are omega-6 and omega-3.

Linoleic acid - LA - is the essential parent fat of the omega-6 family. Alpha-linolenic acid - ALA - is the essential parent fat of the omega-3 family.

Using enzymes, the body can convert these parent fats into other fatty acids within their respective families -their “children” or metabolites.

And just to add one more term: LA and ALA are called essential fatty acids because the body cannot make them. We must obtain both from our diet.

H**pseed oil naturally provides substantial amounts of both LA and ALA in one plant food.

Swipe through and it should all start to make sense.

What does cold-pressed mean and how does it compare with other oil-extraction methods?

Cold-pressed oils are mechanically extracted without the application of heat. This method can retain more of the oil’s natural flavour, colour and minor compounds, including some antioxidants.

The NOVA classification groups foods according to the extent and purpose of their processing. Vegetable oils, including cold-pressed h**pseed oil, are classified as Group 2: processed culinary ingredients. This does not make them ultra-processed; Group 4 is reserved for industrial formulations generally containing ingredients or additives not commonly used in home cooking.

Further processing and refining can produce a more neutral oil with a higher smoke point and greater versatility. However, it may also remove some of the natural compounds retained through cold pressing.

Importantly, “cold-pressed” describes how an oil was extracted—it does not, by itself, tell us whether that oil is suitable for heating. Heat stability also depends on the oil’s fatty-acid composition, freshness and antioxidants, together with the temperature, duration and method of heating.

That is why H**p & Co h**pseed oil was independently tested under oven-heating conditions and recommended for baking at up to 190°C for no longer than one hour.

Why is h**pseed oil sold in a dark bottle?

It isn’t simply a packaging choice.

H**pseed oil is naturally rich in polyunsaturated fats—including the essential fats linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3). These fats are nutritionally valuable, but they are also susceptible to oxidation.

Light can accelerate this process. H**pseed oil’s natural green pigment, chlorophyll, can absorb light and help initiate reactions between oxygen and the oil’s fatty acids.

Dark glass reduces the amount of light reaching the oil, helping to slow oxidation and protect its flavour and nutritional quality. But—as the carousel explains—the bottle is not a suit of armour.

Keep the cap firmly closed and store your oil somewhere cool and dark, away from windows and the heat of the stove.

The dark bottle limits light.
The closed cap limits fresh oxygen.
Cool storage slows oxidation.

Small habits help protect those essential fats.

“Processed” and “ultra-processed” are not the same thing.

Most foods undergo some processing. Oil must be extracted from its seed or fruit; vegetables may be frozen; and milk is pasteurised. Processing can make food edible, safe or convenient.

Ultra-processed foods go considerably further. They are often industrial formulations made from refined ingredients, with additives used to alter flavour, texture, appearance or shelf life.

In this short CBS interview, Professor Dariush Mozaffarian discusses what ultra-processed foods are, their potential effects on our health and how to recognise them.

This also connects with our recent posts about cooking oils: how an oil is extracted and processed matters—but using an oil as an ingredient in home cooking is quite different from consuming an industrially formulated food product.

The practical message isn’t that everything must be made from scratch. It is to understand what we are buying and choose recognisable, minimally processed ingredients more often.

H**pseed oil is one such ingredient—pressed from h**p seeds and ready to drizzle, dress or, when appropriately tested, use in oven baking.

We take it for granted that we can cook with oil - but why can we, and are all oils equally heat-stable?

The answer depends on both the oil and how it is used. Its fatty-acid composition, processing, freshness and natural antioxidants all influence its stability. So do the cooking temperature, heating time and method - whether baking, shallow frying or deep frying.

Understanding these factors helps us choose the right oil for the job and understand how heat can affect its flavour, nutritional quality and suitability for consumption.

Place olive oil in the refrigerator and it will commonly become cloudy or begin to thicken. H**pseed oil behaves rather differently.

According to researchers J.C. Callaway and David W. Pate, h**pseed oil “does not begin to thicken until it is stored for at least several days below –20°C.”

Why the difference?

H**pseed oil is particularly rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids—typically around 55% linoleic acid (LA) and 20% alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). The structure of these fats helps them remain fluid at much lower temperatures.

The same principle helps explain why highly unsaturated fats are important in cold-water fish. Omega-3 fatty acids help their cell membranes remain fluid and functional rather than becoming too rigid in cold conditions.

The authors even suggest that the greater degree of unsaturation found in some northern h**p varieties may help protect their seeds from freezing solid during harsh winters.

From h**p seeds to cold-water fish, essential fats are rather good at keeping things moving.

What happens to plant omega-3 after we consume it?

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an essential fat with important functions of its own. The body can also convert some ALA into the longer-chain omega-3s EPA and DHA—but that conversion is limited and varies between individuals.

Interestingly, vegetarians and vegans generally have lower blood levels of EPA and DHA, yet still show favourable cardiometabolic health profiles. This recent review suggests that overall diet and the body’s own regulatory mechanisms may help compensate for a lower intake of preformed EPA and DHA.

The practical message? Include ALA-rich foods regularly. Flax, chia, walnuts, canola and h**p are all useful plant sources. Algae-derived EPA and DHA are another option when appropriate.

H**p seeds and h**p seed oil naturally provide both essential fats: LA and ALA.
