How to Spot An Unserious Buyer: Tips for Poultry Farmers

As a poultry farmer, attracting reliable customers is crucial so you must be “sharp”. Here are some tips to identify potential buyers who may not be serious about purchasing your birds:

The "Lowball Offer" Tactic:

You've likely encountered customers who:

Ask questions first: They inquire about availability, location etc., before discussing price.

Offer a lower price: After extended conversation, they propose a significantly lower price than your advertised one.

Why does this happen?

These buyers might be:

Price shoppers: They contact multiple farmers hoping for the cheapest deal.

Unsure of their needs: They haven't determined their budget or desired quantity.

How to Respond:

Be upfront about pricing: State the price per bird and additional details like age and weight in your initial response.

Qualify leads early: Before lengthy discussions, politely confirm price agreement before proceeding.

Here is an example of such a conversation:

You: "Hello, this is Kelly Poultry Farms. How can I help you today?"

Customer: "Good afternoon, my name is John. I saw your post on Facebook. Do you still have POLs (Point of lay) for sale?"

You: "Yes, we have 1000 POLs available. They are 15 weeks old, They weigh approximately 900g each, and our price is N3,700 per bird. Is this okay with you?"

Customer: (Answers yes or no)

If yes, continue the conversation. If no, politely explain your pricing and leave it at that, they will look elsewhere if it doesn't meet their budget.

Additional Tips:

Offer tiered pricing: Consider volume discounts to larger purchases.

Highlight value: Explain the benefits of your birds (e.g., breed, quality) to justify your pricing.

Clearly state your terms: Mention minimum order quantities or delivery fees upfront.

Benefits:

Save time: Don't invest time in lengthy conversations with uncommitted buyers.

Focus on serious buyers: Invest your energy in potential customers who are willing to pay your fair price.

Share your own experiences with "unserious" buyers in the comments below! Let's help each other navigate the poultry business effectively.
