UNDERSTANDING PROBIOTICS & PREBIOTICS

Probiotics = Good bacteria. Prebiotics = Food for good bacteria. Together, they keep your gut balanced and healthy!

Our gut is like a bustling city full of bacteria, both good and bad. The good bacteria (probiotics) help break down food, produce vitamins, and fight off harmful invaders. But they need proper nourishment to thrive (prebiotics).

🎯 Probiotics are live bacteria that add to the beneficial microbes in your gut. They’re found in fermented foods like yoghurt/ nunu, kunu, iru (locust beans), Ogiri, Ogi (fermented pap made from grains).

🎯 Prebiotics are fibers that feed good bacteria, found in foods like onions, garlic, unripe bananas, whole grains, honey, tigernuts, fruits and vegetables.

Eating both ensures a balanced gut, reducing bloating, boosting immunity, and improving digestion which eventually have a positive impact on overall well-being!

Remember a your gut is your second brain and a healthy gut translate to an healthy living.

How Fiber Helps Your Gut: The Natural Digestive Fix
In Nigeria, we love our food heavy—swallows, rice, beans, bread, and more. But many of us don’t eat enough fiber, which is like a broom for your stomach. Without fiber, your gut can get sluggish, leading to constipation, bloating, and even weight gain.

There are 2 Types of Fiber and Where to Find Them

1. Soluble Fiber: Found in foods like Tigernut oats, beans, and carrots. It helps control blood sugar and reduces cholesterol.

2. Insoluble Fiber: Found in Tigernut, whole grains, vegetables, and nuts. It helps food move smoothly through your digestive tract.

Best Fiber-Rich Nigerian Foods
• Unripe plantain
• Beans
• Okra (great for soups)
• Garden eggs
• Bitterleaf
• Tigernuts
• Whole grains like guinea corn and Millet
And lots more.

How to Add More Fiber to Your Diet
• Swap white rice for brown rice.
• Eat whole fruits instead of drinking juice.
• Add more veggies to your soups and stews.
• Snack on nuts, veggies (such as carrots and cucumber) and tigernuts, instead of junk food.

A fiber-rich diet is the easiest way to improve digestion and avoid constipation!.

Oya oo‼️ let us do some educational talk about our gut in simple relatable format.

See ehn how well do you understand your gut health and what can cause an unhealthy gut. Do you even know that an unhealthy health can affect your overall well-being.

See ehn as a Nigerian we all know we love our food—whether it’s amala and ewedu, rice and stew, or abacha, Fufu and ofe n'sala, pounded yam and egusi, tuwo with gbegiri, we so much love our delicacies that even when we live in diaspora we still crave for them . But do you ever think about how your body processes all these delicious meals? Your gut does all the heavy lifting‼️ thanks to the gut microbiome.

What is the Gut Microbiome?
The gut microbiome is a collection of trillions of bacteria, fungi, and microorganisms that live in our intestines.

Think of them like a marketplace where some traders (bacteria) sell fresh, healthy food, while others bring in bad, expired goods. If the market is well-organized, everything runs smoothly. But if the bad traders take over, there’s wahala‼️

🎯Signs of an Unhealthy Gut: If you’re always experiencing:

📌 Frequent bloating and gas

📌Constipation or diarrhea

📌Sugar cravings and mood swings

📌Constant fatigue and sluggishness

Then just know that it is time to reset your gut niyen oo.

So How can you Maintain a Healthy Gut

1. EAT FIBER-RICH FOODS – Fiber acts like a broom, sweeping waste out of your intestines. Foods like beans, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits will help keep your gut clean.

2. ALWAYS STAY HYDRATED – Water is life! Drinking enough water helps digestion and prevents constipation.

3. INCLUDE PROBIOTICS & PREBIOTICS – These are friendly bacteria that keep your gut balanced. Eat fermented foods like pap (Ogi/Akamu), yogurt, and Apple cider vinegar (with mother) and fufu (for swallow) other. For prebiotics bake with Tigernut and wholegrains rich in fiber.

4. REDUCE JUNK FOOD & SUGAR – Sugar feeds the bad bacteria, causing bloating and discomfort. Instead of sodas, try all natural tigernut Milk, or zobo drink. Generally reduce intake of over processed food and sugar and chemical laden food in the name of flavor enhancers and preservatives.

If you want to improve your gut health, start small and improve on it gradually. Reduce processed foods, drink more water, and eat local, natural superfoods. Your belly will thank you!
