Below are the first 5 lines (abyāt) of Ash-Shāṭibiyyah in Arabic, followed by a brief explanation of each. The poem is about the seven canonical Qur’anic recitations and was authored by Imam al-Shatibi in Rajaz metre.
البيت 1
بدأتُ باسمِ اللهِ في النَظمِ أولا
تَبَاركَ رَحْمَاناً رَحِيماً وَمَوْئِلا
Explanation:
The author begins by mentioning the name of Allah, seeking His blessings. He praises Allah as Rahman (Most Merciful), Rahim (Most Compassionate), and as the one to whom people turn for help (maw’ila).
البيت 2
وَثَنَّيْتُ صَلَّى اللهُ رَبِّي عَلَى النَّبِي
مُحَمَّدٍ المُهْتَدِي إِلَى النُّورِ مُجْمَلا
Explanation:
The poet sends blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), describing him as the one who guided people to light (truth and Islam) and as a comprehensive source of guidance.
البيت 3
وَسَيَّرْتُ هذا النَّظْمَ بَعْدُ تَوَكُّلِي
عَلَى اللهِ مِنهُ العَوْنُ يُجْتَلَى الجَلَا
Explanation:
He says that he composed this poem relying on Allah, seeking His help and clarity (for understanding and writing the verses correctly).
البيت 4
وَإِنِّي لَأَرْجُو أَنْ يُقَرِّبَ نَفْعُهُ
مَقَالًا يُبِينُ الرُّشْدَ وَيُسْلِكُهُ السُّهُلا
Explanation:
He hopes that this work will benefit students and teachers by making the path to understanding the Qirā’āt easier and clearer.
البيت 5
وَيَجْعَلَهُ لِلْخَيْرِ دَعْوَةَ دَاعِيٍ
بِهِ يُبْتَغَى وَجْهُ الكَرِيمِ فَيُقْبَلَا
Explanation:
He wishes that this poem serves as a sincere invitation to good, seeking only Allah's pleasure — and that it be accepted.
