*Everything you need to know about Stingless Bee Honey
What is Stingless Bee Honey (Madu Kelulut)?
-Kelulut honey comes from stingless bees (Meliponines) that possess a unique behaviour of collecting nectar from multiple flowers and extrafloral nectaries. The nectar then goes through a conversion in the bees’ honey-stomach to change/transform into honey and are transmitted/deposited into cerumen pots which are developed from propolis. This gives the honey its high nutrients and antioxidant properties. Research has established that Kelulut honey has 10 times the amount of antioxidant properties compared to ordinary honey. Kelulut honey is known to have a broad spectrum of anti-biotic, anti-fungal activities, and is a potent anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory agent. Kelulut honey has been researched and proved to be the most potent and nutritious type of honey with the above properties. Since 2017 the government has branded Kelulut Honey as a Superfood of Malaysia.
*Is stingless bee honey good for you?
-A small number of reports have documented the beneficial effects of stingless bee honey in different contexts, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and cataract studies and anti-inflammatory activity.
-Anti-inflammatory properties of stingless bee honey may reduce the severity of pulmonary manifestations in COVID-19 Infections
Potentially useful in these cases, honey is a natural substance with several known benefits. Honey is rich in phenolic compounds, mainly flavonoids and phenolic acids, which act as potent antioxidants (5). Honey’s anti-inflammatory action is also well-documented. Stingless bee honey is a type of honey produced by a stingless bee (Meliponine sp.) that is richer in polyphenols compared to other types of honey. Stingless bee honey is only produced in tropical and subtropical regions and features a sweet-sour taste, high moisture content and minimal crystallisation. Recent evidence indicates that stingless bee honey has many potential therapeutic benefits, including antibacterial qualities, anti-obesity impacts, and others. Stingless bee honey possesses several valuable properties under pathological conditions, rendering it a promising functional food that could be a reasonable dietary intervention to prevent or treat chronic subclinical systemic (CSSI) related diseases.

*Why stingless bee honey is sour?
-Stingless bee honey has a distinctive “bush” taste—a mix of sweet and sour with a hint of fruit. The taste comes from plant resins—which the bees use to build their hives and honey pots—and varies at different times of year depending on the flowers and trees visited.
*Is stingless bee honey good for diabetics?
-In 2020 researchers at the University of Queensland found that some species of stingless bee in Australia, Malaysia, and Brazil produce honey that has trehalulose -a sugar with a low glycaemic index (GI) rather than the usual glucose and fructose. This honey is helpful for health because blood sugar level does not rise quickly. It is also beneficial as it does not cause tooth decay. The university’s findings supported the long-standing claims of Indigenous Australian people that native honey is beneficial for human health. https://rb.gy/ny6qa
