IN THE 1920s, a group of 10 people from India started a small business making two types of Indian snacks called kacang putih at a settlement located at the foot of a limestone hill in Gunung Cheroh, Ipoh. The business actually started flourishing after tragedy struck the area in early 1970s. In 1973, part of the

hill collapsed onto the squatter colony, killing about 40 residents there. To avoid another disaster, the Perak state government allocated land in Buntong to relocate the affected residents. ed at the foot of a limestone hill in Gunung Cheroh, Ipoh. The growth of Ipoh and its increasing population led to brisk business for the spicy and delicious kacang putih, a collective name for a variety of roasted, deep-fried or steamed nuts and other Indian snacks. Today, a cluster of 50 families, the descendants of the Gunung Cheroh settlement, live in Buntong producing over 20 varieties of kacang putih snacks. It is now a flourishing industry and Kampung Kacang Putih, as the village is known, is one of the country’s main supplier of the snacks.
