Sometimes you have to assess the situation calmly before investing in livestock farming.

Truthfully, success in livestock farming depends on more than just buying animals. You must have:
• Ready labor
• Access to feed whether free range or zero grazing
• Reliable water sources or water points
• Veterinary services and good agrovets
• A ready market through butcheries, brokers, slaughterhouses, or local markets

Without proper systems, livestock farming can become very expensive very fast.

How often do you spray your animals?

Here at The Herdsman Dream Farm, we do it every Sunday and it has worked for us big time, especially because our animals are free rangers. Regular spraying helps us control ticks early, reduce disease pressure, and keep the herd healthy and comfortable.

Consistency is the secret.
Miss one week and the ticks start acting like they pay rent on the goats. 😅

• Help with heat regulation in hot climates
• Very distinct compared to many small indigenous breeds
• Give the breed its bold and elegant appearance
• Often wide and soft textured

This is the stage where good feeding, clean water, and less stress matter the most. A healthy doe during pregnancy usually means stronger kids, better milk production, and fewer complications during kidding.

A few important reminders:

• Avoid overcrowding and rough handling
• Give enough minerals and quality forage
• Keep their sleeping area dry and clean
• Watch body condition closely without overfeeding
• Separate heavily pregnant does from aggressive animals
• Late pregnancy is not the time for experiments with feeds

A calm pregnant doe is basically carrying the future of the herd on four legs. Handle her like an investment, not just another animal in the pen.

This is one of the most peaceful parts of farming life.
Dust in the air.
Golden skies.
Hooves from the bushes.
A herdsman counting blessings without even trying.

Goat bells help farmers:

• Identify lead goats and movement patterns
• Keep some predators cautious because of constant noise

Water is life in the semi arid.

Provide water! Either by jerricans, water points, ox cart, wheelbarrow, or by any means possible. Livestock can survive harsh grazing conditions, but without water everything crashes very fast.

A thirsty animal loses strength, appetite, milk production, fertility, and resistance to disease. In dry areas, water management is not a luxury. It is survival.

The herdsman who controls water controls the herd.
