The One Step Many Farmers Skip Before Planting Fruit Trees

Many farmers invest heavily in seedlings, fertilizers, and irrigation… but forget one very important thing; soil testing. Then later, the trees struggle, leaves turn yellow, fruits remain small, or growth becomes slow without understanding the real problem.

Soil testing helps you know exactly what your soil is missing before you plant. It tells you the nutrient levels, soil pH, and whether your land is suitable for the fruit you want to grow. This saves you from wasting money on the wrong fertilizers or planting crops that may not perform well in your area.

Healthy soil means healthier trees, stronger roots, better flowering, and sweeter fruits. Farmers who test their soil early usually make better decisions and avoid costly mistakes later.

Fruit farming is a long-term investment. Starting without understanding your soil is like building a house without checking the foundation.

At Frutunda, we encourage farmers to plant smart from the beginning for better yields and long-term success.

Why Some Jackfruits Taste Amazing While Others Disappoint

Have you ever cut open a jackfruit expecting sweetness only to find it bland or less enjoyable? Many farmers think all jackfruits are the same, but the truth is, sweetness starts from the seedling and how the tree is managed.

The variety you plant matters a lot. Good quality seedlings are more likely to produce sweeter, fleshier fruits with better aroma and texture. Soil fertility, enough sunlight, and proper watering during fruit development also play a big role in how sweet your jackfruits become.

Harvesting time matters too. Picking fruits too early can affect taste and flavor, while allowing them to mature properly improves sweetness naturally.

A well-managed jackfruit tree does more than produce fruits, it gives fruits people actually enjoy buying and eating.

Jackfruit seedlings available at Frutunda for Kes 300 each.

Why Every Farmer Wants to Add Fig Trees in Their Orchard

There is something special about walking into an orchard and spotting healthy fig trees loaded with fruits. Many farmers are now adding figs to their farms because the demand keeps growing while very few people produce them locally.

Figs are loved because they can give farmers good returns from a small space. The trees are easy to manage once established and they continue producing fruits for many years. Many customers also look for figs because of their sweet taste and health benefits.

Another reason farmers love figs is that they attract attention. Visitors, buyers, and even neighbors are always curious when they see fig fruits growing well in an orchard. A few fig trees can completely change the value and uniqueness of a farm.

At Frutunda, we continue to see more farmers asking for fig seedlings as they diversify their orchards with high value fruits.
Seedlings are available at Kes 500 each.

Conditions for a Thriving Dragon Fruit Orchard

Climate
Dragon fruit thrives in subtropical to tropical climates. In Kenya, it is well-suited for regions with temperatures between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius (68 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit).

Soil
Dragon fruit prefers well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 6.0 to 7.0. Sandy loam or loamy soils are ideal.

Watering
Adequate irrigation is crucial, especially during the flowering and fruiting stages. Implement a drip irrigation system to ensure controlled and efficient water delivery.

Temperature
Dragon fruit plants are sensitive to frost. They require protection in areas where temperatures can drop significantly.

Growing Characteristics

Height
Dragon fruit plants are climbing cacti that can grow between 4 to 6 feet in height. The use of support structures like trellises is common.

Planting
Dragon fruit can be planted using stem cuttings. Planting holes should be prepared with well-rotted organic matter to enhance soil fertility and structure.

Stem Cuttings
Sections of the stem that are planted to propagate new dragon fruit plants.

Maturity
Dragon fruit plants typically start flowering and producing fruit within 2-3 years after planting.

Purple passion fruit is a joy to grow and it is rewarding for the passion fruit farmer. The passion fruit makes up for a rich diet and can be used for making juices, jam, ice cream, and other goodies. The fruits give more than just nutritional value to you but also improve the income of farmers who take care of them. Passion fruits are even regarded as an important cash crop that can be adopted by small-scale farmers.

The plants do well in cool temperatures with an altitude between 1200 meters to 2000 meters above sea level. To have a successful harvest of passion fruits, it requires annual rainfall between 900 millimeters to 2000 millimeters.

What Makes Pomegranates Crack Before Harvest?

You wait patiently for your pomegranates to mature, then just before harvest, the fruits begin cracking.

This problem is more common than many farmers think.

Irregular watering, sudden changes in moisture, and nutrient imbalance are some of the major causes. Cracked fruits lose market value and attract pests very quickly.

Proper orchard management helps maintain healthy, attractive fruits ready for the market.

Frutunda supplies quality pomegranate seedlings for farmers interested in high-value fruit farming.

Hass Avocado Harvest Season Is Almost Here. But Are You Ready?

For many farmers across Kenya, this is the season we’ve been waiting for. Months of watering, spraying, pruning, and protecting the trees are finally about to pay off. But here’s the truth many farmers learn the hard way, how you handle your avocados before and after harvest can determine whether you make good money or losses.

One of the biggest mistakes farmers make is harvesting too early. Just because the fruit looks big and mature on the outside doesn’t always mean it’s ready for export. Immature fruits lead to rejection, poor oil content, and unhappy buyers. Patience matters.

Another important thing is how you harvest. Pulling fruits carelessly, dropping them, or using rough tools causes bruises that may not show immediately, but they appear later during transport or ripening. Export markets are very strict on quality.

After harvest, proper handling is everything. Keep fruits away from direct sunlight, avoid piling them roughly, and sort out damaged fruits early. Clean, well-handled avocados always attract better buyers and better prices.

And remember, healthy trees after harvest are the foundation of next season’s success. Once harvesting is done, continue feeding and caring for your trees instead of neglecting them.

Hass avocado farming is no longer just farming, it’s quality business. Farmers who focus on quality are the ones building long-term success.

At Frutunda, we continue walking with farmers beyond seedlings, through every stage of production and harvest success.

Ready to Harvest Your Home-Grown Kiwis?

Are your kiwi vines laden with fruit, ready to be picked? Harvesting your own kiwis is a rewarding culmination of your gardening efforts.

Here’s a quick guide to ensure you pick them at just the right time

1. Timing is Key- Kiwis are typically ready for harvest usually around October to November, depending on your location and variety.

2. Checking Ripeness- Ripe kiwis should yield slightly to gentle pressure. The skin may also begin to wrinkle slightly.

3. Harvesting Technique- Use pruning shears to cut the kiwi from the vine, leaving a short stem attached to the fruit. Be gentle to avoid damaging the fruit or the vine.

4. Post-Harvest Care- Handle kiwis delicately to prevent bruising. After picking, allow them to ripen further at room temperature for a few days until they reach your desired softness.

Share your kiwi harvesting moments with us.
