Connecting, collaborating, and turning ideas into action at the WorldFMC Fourth General Assembly!

Our Co-Lab sessions moderated by J. Robin Moon (WorldFMC), brought WorldFMC members together for meaningful moments of connection, peer learning, and knowledge sharing. Together, we exchanged experiences, explored challenges, and shared practical solutions to strengthen local food policies and create impact in our communities.

👉 Growing Local Food Policy
Facilitated by Raoul Tiraboschi (WorldFMC), this Co-Lab featured:
- Jean-Nick Trudel, Association des marchés publics du Québec, Québec, Canada
- Caamo Kane, Dakar Farmers Market, Senegal

👉 How to Create Impact?
Facilitated by Viola Capriola (WorldFMC), this Co-Lab featured:
- George Cățean, Smag din Tara Barsei, Romania
- Ana Gabriela Calderon Gutierrez, Mercado el 100, Mexico

Through these inspiring best-practice examples, participants gained direct insights into different approaches to local food policy and explored how local initiatives can generate meaningful impact.

The sessions continued with a tabletop discussion for members, creating space to reflect on key takeaways, exchange ideas with peers, and identify concrete actions to bring back to their own organisations and communities.

These Co-Labs were about building connections, learning from one another, and transforming shared experiences into practical solutions.

Together, we are strengthening connections and turning collective knowledge into action for more sustainable and impactful local food systems.

A new partnership for stronger local food systems.

We are pleased to announce that the World Farmers Markets Coalition (WorldFMC) and the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen sustainable, inclusive and resilient local food systems.

Signed during the WorldFMC Fourth General Assembly in Nairobi, the agreement brings together the Alliance’s expertise in agricultural biodiversity and food systems research with WorldFMC’s global network of farmers markets and short food supply chains.

Together, we will work to:
- protect agrobiodiversity and promote local and traditional varieties
- strengthen family farming and agroecological practices
- develop research, training and knowledge exchange
- support international cooperation and joint initiatives
- contribute to policy dialogue and advocacy for more equitable food systems

At the heart of this partnership is a shared belief: stronger local food systems can help build more diverse, resilient and inclusive communities.

We look forward to turning this agreement into concrete opportunities for farmers, markets and communities around the world.

A new chapter for WorldFMC!

The Fourth General Assembly in Nairobi was a particularly important moment for the World Farmers Markets Coalition: alongside bringing our global community together, this was also an elective General Assembly, giving members the opportunity to shape the Coalition’s leadership for the next mandate.

On 8 October, WorldFMC members elected Richard McCarthy as President for a further mandate, together with a Board representing the Coalition’s regional constituencies:
- North America: Jean Nick Trudel
- Central & South America: Thiago Gomide Nasser
- Europe: Randi Ledaal Gjertsen
- Sub-Saharan Africa: Dennis Andaye
- MENA: Jean Charles Khairallah
- Asia: Achala Samaradivakara
- East Asia & Oceania: Wallapa Van Willenswaard

Jean Charles Khairallah and Achala Samaradivakara were also elected as Vice Presidents.

This new governance reflects the diversity of our Coalition and the strength of a network that continues to grow across regions and continents.

As we look ahead, we do so with a renewed leadership and a shared commitment to growing local food systems together.

The 2026 WorldFMC Awards winners are here!

After receiving 100+ candidatures from around the world, the second edition of the WorldFMC Awards came to a close in Nairobi during our Fourth General Assembly.

Three categories. Nine finalists. And three stories that stood out for their commitment to stronger local food systems:

- BEST FARMER - Jarinya Sonphungam, Thailand
From transforming her own farm from conventional to organic agriculture to building a community of 20 organic farmers and connecting local producers with schools and consumers, Jarinya’s journey is one of resilience, learning and commitment to a healthier food system.

- BEST MARKET MANAGER - Ana Calderón, Mexico
For more than 15 years, Ana has guided Mercado El 100 in Mexico City, strengthening direct relationships between producers and consumers while supporting organic certification, producer training, food education and community engagement.

- BEST CITY - Cochabamba, Bolivia
Represented by Asociación ECO Feria, Cochabamba was recognised for its growing commitment to agroecology, food sovereignty and local markets, showing how public policies and grassroots initiatives can work together to create stronger local food systems.

Behind this selection was an international jury bringing together Raoul Tiraboschi, Thiago Gomide Nasser, Enrico Azzone, Kelly Verel and Richard McCarthy, experts and practitioners with experience spanning food policy, farmers markets, urban markets, international cooperation and local food systems.

Their diverse perspectives helped us recognise the impact, innovation and commitment behind this year’s candidatures.

Three winners. Three different contexts. One shared vision: stronger, more sustainable and more connected local food systems.

Congratulations to our winners and to all nine finalists, and a special thank you to our jury for helping us celebrate the people and places making this movement stronger.

What can farmers markets teach us about transforming food systems?

At the WorldFMC Fourth General Assembly in Nairobi, we explored this question during “National Projects of Excellence: Experiences from Around the World.”
The session brought together Valentina Sommacal (FAO), Sara Mbago-Bhunu (IFAD) and Enrico Azzone (CIHEAM Bari), moderated by Viola Capriola (WorldFMC), to reflect on what international cooperation programmes are teaching us about the role of farmers markets.

From strengthening market access for small-scale farmers to building resilient local food systems and creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, the discussion explored what works, where the opportunities are, and what comes next.

The conversation then moved from international perspectives to first-hand experiences from the WorldFMC community.

Alla Pecheniuk and Randi Ledaal Gjertsen from Ukraine and Norway, Karolina Jarmołowska, from Poland, and Carlos Ernesto Lazo Gago from Peru shared how being part of WorldFMC has helped create new opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange and international cooperation.

From Ukraine to Peru and beyond, one message stood out: Local experiences become more powerful when we connect them, learn from them and share them.

This is how a global network can help turn individual projects into collective knowledge, and collective knowledge into new opportunities for local food systems.

Women are at the heart of local food systems. And their voices need to be at the heart of the conversation.

At the WorldFMC Fourth General Assembly in Nairobi, we brought this conversation to the forefront through a panel organised in collaboration with Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations , in the framework of the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026.
The session was opened by Tacko Ndiaye, Gender Team Leader at FAO’s Rural Transformation and Gender Equality Division, and moderated by Valentina Sommacal, Senior Rural Institutions Specialist in the same division.

Women leaders and food-system practitioners from across the world came together to share experiences, challenges and ideas around leadership, empowerment, collective action and the future of local food systems.

The discussion highlighted the role of farmers markets as spaces for women’s economic empowerment, community mobilisation and leadership, and the ways women themselves are helping make local food systems more resilient, inclusive and sustainable.

From farms to markets, from community organising to policy dialogue, women are already driving change.

The question is now: how do we recognise, support and amplify that leadership?

The conversation featured Catherine Banda of Kenyan Peasant League Women Articulation; Eman Seif, DBA of Alexandria Chamber of Commerce ACOC, Egypt; Paola Gomez of Mercado Agroecológico Tierra Viva, Colombia; Esther Mamani Soliz of Ecoferia Cochabamba, Bolivia; Wallapa van Willenswaard of INI Innovation, Thailand; Achala Samaradivaka of Good Market, Sri Lanka; Lucy Mulenkei, co-founder and Vice President/Vice Chair of the International Indigenous Women’s Forum (FIMI); and Maimouna BAH Bayanga, co-Lead of the Agriculture Pillar of the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) Guinea National Chapter.

Thank you to all the inspiring women who contributed their voices to this important conversation 💚

What does it mean to be part of a global movement? And what can international cooperation make possible for local food systems?

At the WorldFMC Fourth General Assembly in Nairobi, we explored these questions during the first session of the second day of the GA on the panel “Beyond Impact: Why Being Part of an International Cooperation Association Matters.”

Moderated by Barbara Billocci, the conversation brought together Winfred Katumo, Kristie Daniel and Dr. Wanjiru Kamau-Rutenberg to reflect on the power of international networks to build alliances, share knowledge, amplify local voices and respond collectively to challenges that cross borders.

The discussion was followed by a roundtable on MAMi II, with Enrico Azzone, Eman Seif, DBA, Jean Charles KHAIRALLAH and Dennis Andaye, offering a concrete example of how international cooperation can move from connection to action.

The first phase of the MAMi project helped build an emerging network of farmers markets across countries. The second phase will build on these connections, creating new opportunities for collaboration, exchange and stronger local food systems.

Because being part of an international network is not just about being connected. It is about what we can achieve when we act together.
