Inspired by Berkeley Farmers Market (California, USA) Organic Bazaar was launched by Thanal in 2003 to bring Organic farmers, producers and consumers together for efficient exchange of organic food. It was launched in 2003 as a once in a month - Second Saturday bazaar. Later the frequency of the bazaar was increased. It was made possible through consistent and persistent extension work, capacity
building and sensitization done among marginal farmers in different pockets of Kerala for enlarging the supply base. Consumer sensitization and awareness programmes also played an important role in getting more consumers to support Organic Bazaar. Organic Bazaar now supports around 450 farmers and caters to atleast 1000 regular consumers, to convert their farms and homes to safe organic food. It sells Organic vegetables and fruits, diverse varieties of rice, millets, pulses, wheat etc. It also has bodyshop and home care products chosen carefully to make sure its free of all hazardous chemicals ( not just the banned ones ! ). Organic Bazaar functions from A12, Annapoorna, Near Jawahar Nagar L.P School, Jawahar Nagar, Kawdiar P.O. Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on all days from 8:30 am am to 8:30 pm.
