We all love our dal! But did you know that while Mung Dal is abundant in India, it has types which are different from each other?!

One such regional mung is Choiti Mung, named by the farmers themselves as this is harvested at the end of the Bengali months of Choitro (mid-March to mid-April).

Native to Bengal and a rare, local find, we celebrate Choiti Mung in all its historical and cultural glory 💛

Available online and at 21B Hindustan Road.

Figs or rather raw figs have historically been a revered ingredient in Bengali kitchens. Raw figs from the _Ficus hispida_ species are different from the fleshy, sweet common figs from the _Ficus Carica_ tree, which we are more familiar with as fresh and dried fruit.

Women in Bengali kitchens have pivotally paved the path for transforming this humble vegetable into a culinary delicacy. They traditionally undertake the tedious task of removing the seeds from raw figs to add to stews and curries, often as a delicious substitute for meat. Previously known as ‘poor people’s food’ owing to their easy availability in the bushes and by the roads, Bengali kitchens uplifted this often neglected vegetable to get a welcome addition to their beloved dishes.

We are serving Dumur diye Golda Chingri-r Jhal at Amar Khamar Lunch Room, best paired with a non-aromatic heirloom rice - Rupshal from Sundarbans.

Available all day.
