🌿 A Milestone for Sustainability & Women Empowerment! ✨

On October 19, 2024, The Collaborative effort of Wipro Foundation, Care Earth Trust and The Canopy Tales finally bore fruit.

Our Project Puvipro - launched its bioenzyme-based cleaning products at WIA Chennai, marking a major step toward eco-friendly living and women’s empowerment. 💚

The event, attended by Padma Venkatraman (WIA President), trustees, and members, focused on the need for non-toxic, plant-based cleaners and the incredible work of WIA & Yein Udaan in empowering women through skill development.

Key Highlights from the Event

🧼 Why Greener Cleaning Matters – Conventional cleaners harm health & the environment. Bioenzyme-based alternatives offer a safe, effective solution.

At the Puvipro project, sustainability isn't just a goal—it's at the core of everything we do. So, after the enzymes were ready, the next stage of the project is to formulate and train Devika from Women’s India Association (WIA) in making bioenzyme-based home and plant care solutions. Together, we worked on:

🌿 Floor Cleaner (Citric Bioenzyme)
🫧 Laundry Liquid (Soapnut-Based)
✨ Surface Cleaner (Tulsi & Neem Enzymes)
🌱 Plant Growth Booster (Mixed Enzymes)

Challenges We Overcame
*Achieving cleaning efficacy while keeping the formulations chemical-free.

*Ensuring longer shelf life using only natural stabilizers.

*Sourcing locally available raw materials to keep the process sustainable.

*Perfecting foam and viscosity without synthetic thickeners.

*Making the process simple and scalable for community-based manufacturing.

This initiative is a step towards empowering women with skills in sustainable product making while reducing toxic chemical usage in our daily lives.

Sorry for the delayed post.
Now the project is successfully over but I'm so thrilled to share how it all happened.

So ...

We successfully completed the first level of bioenzyme batching training at both WIA (in May) and Yein Udaan! 🌿

Women from these NGOs have been hands-on, learning how to turn everyday organic waste into powerful bioenzymes. They befriended their neighborhood juice shops and became regular collaborators.

The next step? Level 2: Formulating bioenzyme-based home care products that will soon be sold commercially, contributing to sustainable living and supporting women’s livelihoods. Grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact with these amazing teams!

Iwill be back with the next set of updates - the exciting one which is the formulation of the final products. Stay tuned!!!

I recently attended a wedding where they made some beautiful eco-friendly choices that truly inspired me:

Reusable Glasses for Drinks: Water and juice were served in stylish reusable glasses, reducing plastic waste. 🥤💦

Herbal Face Pack Return Gifts: Guests were delighted to receive natural, homemade herbal face packs as return gifts—such a thoughtful and sustainable choice! 🌿✨

Food that needed to be packed where done in banana leaf and paper.

I'm privileged to be part of this Urban Ecology Small Grant funded by Wipro Foundation with the avid guidance from Care Earth Trust.

As part of the small grant program, This project aims to empower self-help group women/NGOs by providing training in the creation of bio-enzyme based eco-friendly home care products. It addresses the need for sustainable, chemical-free alternatives in the market, benefiting consumers’health and the environment.

The social impact involves women’s skill development and financial independence. Economically, it opens new income opportunities for participants. Environmentally, it reduces the use of harmful chemicals and plastic waste, promoting a greener, more sustainable future for all.

As part of the first initiative of the Project,It was to identify suitable candidates for the project and the hunt began from the month of Feb 2024.

I was directed to reach out to TNULM (Tamil Nadu Urban Livelihood Mission), which maintains a registry of self-help groups from across Tamil Nadu. Following a series of inquiries and requests, I finally obtained a list of 12 self-help group women based in Chennai, already engaged in the production of herbal products.

Regrettably, many entries on the list had to be rejected due to various criteria. These included locations situated too far away from Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) limits, lack of interest in receiving training in Bioenzymes, prior exposure to Bioenzymes, and inadequate space in their households to accommodate drums, among other factors.

After receiving similar responses from numerous SHG women, I decided to explore the possibility of collaborating with notable NGOs specializing in women's empowerment or related fields. I believed that such organizations might be able to assist our project in identifying a suitable candidate who meets the necessary criteria.

Then we turned to NGOs for better infrastructure, structured processes, women members being actively involved and having a commitment partner which led us to choosing 2 very impactful NGOs.. and .
