3 people will tell you a 1-acre farm costs ₹50 lakh, ₹70 lakh, and ₹1.5 crore. And all 3 could be right🌱
Because an acre is a land measurement, not a farm specification.
A basic protected cultivation setup, a commercial hydroponic farm and a highly automated climate-controlled facility can all occupy the same 1 acre while having completely different capital requirements.
The cost can change with:
→ Structure: naturally ventilated polyhouse vs fan-pad/climate-controlled setup
→ Growing system: basic cultivation vs hydroponic systems
→ Automation: manual controls vs sensors, fertigation and climate automation
→ Crop: different crops require different infrastructure and operating inputs
→ Water & power: filtration, treatment, irrigation and backup systems
→ Post-harvest: grading, packing, cooling and storage
→ Site conditions: land development, electricity, water availability and installation
Even government cost norms reflect this variation. Under the 2025 MIDH/NHB guidelines, protected cultivation has different admissible cost ceilings depending on the crop and project components; for high-value vegetables under a polyhouse, the revised project-mode ceiling is ₹55 lakh per acre.
And real projects vary too. An ICAR-documented 3,000 sq m polyhouse project had a reported polyhouse cost of ₹35 lakh, with additional crop and operating economics around the production system.
So when someone asks, “How much does a 1-acre farm cost?”
The honest answer is: What kind of farm are you trying to build?
Before deciding your budget, define the crop, structure, technology, production model and market.
Don’t start with the budget. Start with the farm you want the budget to build.
