Its official! Lamby is going to be a mum! (all being well 🤞). She'll be scanned with the rest of the flock at approximately 80 days gestation, and then we'll know how to feed her properly, depending on whether she's expecting 1, 2, or 3 lambs.

Lamby (Patricia) is just over 1.5 years old. She's never had lambs before because she was too small to go to the rams last October. She's a Rouge X and has mated with a Belclare Ram - if she has females we will most likely keep them as the next generation of breeding females.

A race over the gate, while checking the sheep earlier today! New way vs. old way 😅.

No children, dogs, or gates harmed in the making of these videos 😉

Progress is going well with the Rams - 13 days after Ram turnout and nearly all the mature ewes have been tipped. Some of the first ones tipped might not hold (if they were coming out heat when the rams were introduced), so we'll see what happens when the rams crayons get changed again - hopefully there won't be too many repeats 🤞 (which show up if the colour left on the ewes wool by the Ram gets replaced by a new colour)

The boys are back in town! Yesterday was a busy day of condition scoring & weighing ewes, doing a full census versus our records, harnessing up the rams, and dropping them out to the ewe groups.

I've bought coloured management tags (red, blue & yellow) for the ewes ears but for now we put a coloured spray dot on their shoulders, to indicate their breed and mating group:

▫️Orange = the older ewes, that aren't Rouge X or Belclare X, and they're going to the Rouge Ram Mad Max

▫️Red = Rouge X ewes, that are going to the two Belclare Rams Laochlain & Kristopher

▫️Blue = Belclare X ewes and ewe lambs (and all other ewe lambs, for their first year) that are going to the two Charollais Rams, Jackstown & Emilio

The lambs are coming in next week and there are a few nice females in that group which we picked yesterday to maybe add to the breeding group, since 7 of the original ewe lambs we picked aren't heavy enough for mating (and will skip this year)...

The two oldest ewes on the farm were born here in 2018, which means they'll be 9yrs old when they have their lambs this coming March! Wow. Not intentional, but nice to know... and they're obviously doing OK since teeth, udders, and weight are all checked before ewes go to the Ram each year.

After refusing to acknowledge me all day yesterday in the sheep pens, Patricia (aka Lamby) decided to say hello just as I turned away to close the field gate behind them - better late than never I suppose 😅

The rams went out yesterday and the kids are very excited that "Lamby" (at 2yrs old) might have babies of her own in spring! 🤞

Many of you know some of my time is spent working at Gurteen College... well, a few weeks ago we were asked if we could give an organic farm walk for some of the students.

So today we welcomed Gurteen's Caroline O'Keeffe with her class of over 40 degree students, accompanied by special guest, Teagasc's Organic Specialist, Elaine Leavy.

The students are studying for a Degree in Agricultural Science and Sustainsbility, which is co-delivered between TUS Thurles (TUS SU Thurles & Clonmel ) and Gurteen College (Gurteen College) at Level 7 and 8.

Some of the topics we covered included:
- ewe breeds and performance, and what we're aiming for with the breeding plan
- the impact of ewe body condition score, nutrition, colostrum, and hygiene at lambing time on prevention of health problems
- markets for organic produce (lamb, barley and oats)
- the flock health plan, permitted / prohibited treatments, & specific rules and requirements of the organic standard and the meat factories (withdrawal periods, record keeping, traceability, meat sales declarations)
- lambing time set up & equipment
- organic tillage and grass production:..soil fertility, organic matter, rotations, yields and profitability (organic vs non- organic)..grassland species (multi species swards), grass measuring & winter forage crops (aka "catch crops" - which are sheep feed but also an environmental measure to protect soil and water from erosion, runoff and leachate)
- farm infrastructure (roadways, fencing, handling systems, penning, and shed design / requirements), and
- schemes (the organic scheme, sheep improvement scheme, sheep welfare scheme, targetted agricultural modernisation scheme, straw incorporation scheme, and farming for water EIP scheme ('catch crop' measure))

It was a pleasure to host Caroline, Elaine and the students, and we hope they got something from their visit 🙂.

Some of my personal favourite cuts:
⭐️ whole shoulder on the bone. This is quite a big cut of meat - ideal as a table centre piece for a special occasion, like Christmas or Easter. I season it fairly well, add rosemary and garlic, surround it with some root vegetables and stock, and cover it for most of the cooking. Remove the cover at the end and a high heat gives that lovely crispy skin 👌
⭐️ Whole leg on the bone - also a very special verge piece for a special occasion...
⭐️ or, the fillet (upper leg) or leg (lower leg) - or both! - as Steaks - these are very convenient, they cook quickly, and you can take out however many you like depending on how many people you're cooking for.
⭐️ and if you know me well, you know I love batch cooking a Tagine (with diced lamb), so I've "ready meals" in the freezer for the days I don't have time to cook but want to eat something nutritious 👌

If you live on your own, or you're the only person in the house who likes lamb 🫣, just know that we can do your entire order as chops & steaks if you like (with some minced or diced lamb).

Any question, please ask 🙏

Prices: €150 per half collected, €300 for a whole lamb collected, plus €25 for delivery per box (1 whole or 2 halves, or 1 half per box).

The friendly lamb, with one little horn (as mentioned yesterday☺️)... Two children, two dogs, and one tractor - with original audio, so you get the full experience 😅😉🫣❤️

(Non sheep dog, dog): Dog going nuts because of the contact between me and the sheep 🙄😅🤦‍♀️

There's not one of us who doesn't enjoy it when a sheep is curious or friendly 🥰. There's one in this field with one tiny little horn, and it enjoys a scratch between its ears ☺️🙏

These are all lambs, and all born last March / April on our farm.
