At Folláin we make Fresh Fruit Preserves, Marmalades, Jams, Relishes, Salsas and Chutneys. We create these delicious products from 100% natural ingredients.

Folláin is the Irish word for wholesome which is at the core of our commitment to honest food made with the purest ingredients to hand. Folláin was born using a 100 year old grapefruit marmalade recipe that had been passed down through family generations. 30 years and more than 30 jams later, Folláin are still piping out preserves in the family factory in Ballyvourney, Co Cork.

Something Worth Sharing❤️

For Míchéal, food has always been about more than what ends up on the plate...

Growing up in Cúil Aodha, cooking for neighbours and sharing meals with family were part of everyday life.

As Peadar and Máirín recall in our latest reel, families would take turns hosting at Christmas. The tables needed to be big enough for everyone...

It’s a tradition that has continued through the generations, and one that has influenced how Míchéal and Máiréad approach Folláin today.

Our Christmas collections bring together some familiar favourites alongside more adventurous flavours, with plenty for those who prefer something savoury to something sweet. Each has been put together with the idea of sharing good food, discovering something new and giving a gift that will actually be enjoyed.

And through our partnership with Simon Communities of Ireland, there’s another reason these collections mean so much to us.

For the fifth consecutive year, we’re donating 50% of the proceeds from all online sales between 1 November and 31 December to Simon Communities of Ireland, supporting their work with people experiencing homelessness and those at risk of losing their homes.

It’s a way for our family business, with the support of our customers, to make a practical contribution to an issue affecting thousands of people across Ireland.

The Gift of Home🎁🏠

There's no hearth like your own hearth...

For Peadar and Máirín Ó Lionáird, Christmas has always involved cooking for family and neighbours, taking turns around one another's tables and sharing what they have.

As Máirín explains in our new family film, that's the reason for the big tables…

But the security of a home, and the opportunity to gather around a table of your own, is something that thousands of people across Ireland are living without.

According to the latest figures shared by Simon Communities of Ireland, nearly 18,000 people are living in emergency accommodation, including almost 6,000 children and more than 270 people aged over 65.

Behind these figures are individuals and families experiencing the uncertainty and hardship of homelessness.

That's why, for the fifth consecutive year, we're proud to partner with through The Gift of Home.

From now until the 31st December, 50% of the proceeds from every online purchase at follain.ie will be donated to Simon Communities of Ireland, helping support their essential work with people experiencing homelessness and those at risk of losing their homes.

In this short film, Peadar, Máirín, Míchéal and Mairéad share their memories of family life in Cúil Aodha, the traditions that have stayed with them and why this partnership is so important to Folláin.

It's also a reminder that while businesses and traditions change over the years, there are some things worth carrying forward.

New Traditions❤️

Mairéad has a fairly practical approach to Christmas presents: give people something they'll actually use. Preferably something delicious. And ideally, something that won't still be sitting in a cupboard come February...

As the second generation of the Ó Lionáird family continues to develop Folláin, our Christmas collections have evolved too.

Familiar preserves sit alongside new flavours, unusual combinations and savoury surprises, reflecting the changing tastes of the people who enjoy them.
But the thinking behind the gifts remains much the same: good food is something to be shared.

This Christmas, that spirit of sharing extends beyond the family table.

Through The Gift of Home, we're once again partnering with , donating 50% of the proceeds from every online purchase between now and the 31st December to support their work across Ireland. With nearly 18,000 people currently in emergency accommodation, including almost 6,000 children, the need for that support is considerable.

We know, Halloween has barely left the building, and we're already making tentative references to Christmas.

A Little More to Share❤️

One of the nicest things about this time of year is the opportunity to share a little more of what we make, the recipes we love and the stories behind them.

And this year, we're starting with a little something for you.

A Little Reinvention🍂

Some recipes are so firmly associated with a particular time of year that we rarely think to make them any other way.

Barmbraic is one of them. Its name comes from the Irish bairín breac, meaning 'speckled loaf', a rather fitting description of the fruit-studded bread that has become such a familiar fixture of Irish autumns.

Traditionally baked as a loaf, sliced thickly and served with plenty of butter, it's a recipe with a long history. But traditions have a rather good habit of adapting to the people who keep them going.

Which brings us to our Mini Barmbraics...

All the familiar flavours of tea-soaked fruit, brown sugar and warming spice, baked in a muffin tin rather than a loaf tin.

They're quicker to bake, easy to portion and particularly well suited to a kitchen full of enthusiastic little helpers.

And while we wouldn't dream of interfering with anyone's preferred way of eating Barmbraic, we'd make a very good case for splitting one warm and adding a generous spoonful of our Traditional Grapefruit Marmalade. The bittersweet citrus is a lovely match for all that rich, spiced fruit.

Little Bakes, Big Appeal 🍂

We've taken the familiar flavours of traditional Barmbraic, or bairín breac, and given them a rather practical makeover.

Meet our mini Barmbraics: individual fruit-filled muffins, made with tea-soaked dried fruit, warming spice and brown sugar.

They're a lovely one to make with children, with plenty of opportunities for little hands to weigh, pour, stir and spoon. And the occasional piece of dried fruit to mysteriously disappear along the way...

Serve split with butter and a generous helping of our Traditional Grapefruit Marmalade.

Mini Barmbraic Muffins
�Makes 12
Ingredients:
- 300g mixed dried fruit (sultanas, raisins and currants)
- 250ml warm, well-brewed tea
- 250g self-raising flour
- 1 tsp mixed spice
- 100g light muscovado or soft brown sugar
- 1 large egg, beaten
- Butter, to serve
- Traditional Grapefruit Marmalade, to serve

Method:
The night before
1. Little hands: Weigh the dried fruit and tip it into a large mixing bowl.
2. Grown-ups: Brew the tea and allow it to cool slightly.
3. Together: Pour the warm tea over the fruit, cover with a tea towel and leave overnight to soak.

Baking day�
4. Grown-ups: Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan / Gas Mark 4). Grease or line a 12-hole muffin tin.�
5. Little hands: Sift the flour and mixed spice into the soaked fruit, including any remaining tea. Add the brown sugar.�
6. Together: Add the beaten egg and gently stir until combined, without overmixing.�7. Little hands: Spoon the mixture into the muffin tin.�
8. Grown-ups: Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.�
9. Allow to cool in the tin for five minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Split, butter and finish with a generous spoonful of our Traditional Grapefruit Marmalade.

Many Hands ...🍂

There's a certain optimism involved in baking with children...
You begin with a recipe, a reasonably tidy kitchen and the belief that everyone will follow the instructions.

Before long, there's flour on the counter, someone has eaten half the raisins, and the mixture has been stirred with considerably more enthusiasm than necessary.

But that's rather the point.

Cooking together gives children something useful to do with their hands, a little responsibility and the satisfaction of having made something that everyone else gets to enjoy.

Our mini Barmbraics are particularly good for this.
The fruit can be weighed and soaked the night before, and the following day brings plenty of opportunities for measuring, mixing and spooning the batter into a muffin tin.

The finished bakes may not all be quite the same size. Nobody is likely to mind.

Especially once they're split open, spread with butter and topped with a generous helping of our Traditional Grapefruit Marmalade.
And if a few make their way to a neighbour, grandparent or friend, all the better...

A Little Kitchen Ingenuity 🍞

Some of our most enduring recipes owe their existence to a rather practical approach to cooking: making something good out of what was already in the kitchen.

Bread and butter pudding is a fine example. Yesterday's bread, a little butter, milk, eggs and sugar, brought together to make something considerably more appealing than the sum of its parts...

It's a reminder that good home cooking has never necessarily been about elaborate ingredients or complicated techniques. Quite often, it's about knowing what to do with what you have.

Of course, we're not opposed to a little embellishment...
A generous layer of our Traditional Raspberry Jam between the slices adds a lovely sharp, fruity contrast to the rich custard and golden, buttery bread.

An old favourite, with a particularly good reason to make it again.
