Title: A New Path Forward
Characters
• MAYA (15): Quiet, brave, wearing an oversized jacket.
• MRS. ADAMS (50s): Warm, welcoming community center counselor.
[SCENE START]
EXT. PARK BENCH - LATE AFTERNOON
Soft wind blows through dry leaves. MAYA sits alone on a cold park bench, clutching an old family photograph in her lap. She looks at the picture, traces her fingers over her parents' faces, and wipes away a single tear.
MAYA
(whispering to herself)
I can’t keep doing this alone. You always told me to be strong, but asking for help isn't being weak... right?
She takes a deep breath, tucks the photo safely into her jacket pocket, stands up, and starts walking.
EXT. COMMUNITY CENTER ENTRANCE - MOMENTS LATER
Maya stands outside a brick building with a sign that reads: "Youth & Family Community Center – Open Doors, Safe Spaces."
She pauses at the door, her hand hovering over the handle. Her breathing is fast. She hesitates, steps back, but then stops, closes her eyes, and takes another deep breath.
MAYA
(v.o. / internal voice)
When Mum and Dad died in the accident, everything turned dark. I tried to handle it all by myself for months. But survival isn't living. I need a hand to hold.
Maya opens the door and steps inside.
INT. COMMUNITY CENTER RECEPTION - CONTINUOUS
The room is warm and brightly lit. Colorful drawings hang on the walls. MRS. ADAMS sits behind a low wooden desk, looking over some papers. She hears the door and looks up with a kind smile.
MRS. ADAMS
Hello there! Welcome. Come on in out of the cold.
Maya stands near the doorway, shifting her weight awkwardly.
MAYA
(voice shaking slightly)
Hi... Um, is this... do you help people here?
MRS. ADAMS
(softens her tone, leaning forward)
We do. We help young people with all sorts of things—big and small. What's your name?
MAYA
I’m Maya. I’m fifteen.
MRS. ADAMS
It’s very nice to meet you, Maya. I’m Mrs. Adams. Do you want to sit down? We have warm tea, water, or just a quiet place to talk.
Maya walks over slowly and sits down in a comfortable chair across from the desk.
MAYA
I lose my parents... a few months ago. I’ve been staying with my aunt, but she’s struggling too, and I... I don't know what to do next. I feel lost all the time.
Mrs. Adams listens attentively, placing a soft box of tissues on the table.
MRS. ADAMS
Maya, I am so sorry for your loss. That is a heavy burden to carry, especially at fifteen. But taking the step to walk through that door today? That was a very brave thing to do.
MAYA
(wiping her eyes)
It was really hard to come here. I was scared.
MRS. ADAMS
It's completely okay to be scared. You don't have to carry this heavy load all by yourself anymore. We are going to help you—with counseling, school support, and helping your aunt too. Step by step.
Maya looks up, a small hint of relief showing on her face.
MAYA
Thank you. That's all I wanted to hear.
EXT. PARK BENCH - SUNSET
Maya sits back on the same park bench. The sun is setting, painting the sky with orange and purple colors. She pulls out the family photo again, looking at it with a gentle, hopeful smile.
MAYA
(v.o.)
I still miss you every single day. But today, I took my first step forward. I’m going to be okay.
She hugs the photo to her chest as the screen fades to black.
