TOPIC: A VICARIOUS DEATH

KEY VERSE:

10. And if his offering be of the flocks, namely, of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt sacrifice; he shall bring it a male without blemish.

11. And he shall kill it on the side of the altar northward before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall sprinkle his blood round about upon the altar.

12. And he shall cut it into his pieces, with his head and his fat: and the priest shall lay them in order on the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar:

13. But he shall wash the inwards and the legs with water: and the priest shall bring it all, and burn it upon the altar: it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

14. And if the burnt sacrifice for his offering to the LORD be of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves, or of young pigeons.

MESSAGE:
Glynn Simmons was wrongly convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death in 1975. He was spared the electric chair two years later after the US Supreme Court temporarily halted executions. His sentence was changed from death to life imprisonment. Mr. Simmons was released from prison in July 2023 after he was declared innocent in the 1974 murder of Carolyn Sue Rogers. His is the longest known wrongful conviction in America. By this time, he had served a nearly 50-year vicarious sentence for the murder he didn’t commit. His sentence was vacated, after a court found that prosecutors had not turned over all evidence to defence lawyers, including that of a witness who had identified other suspects.

During the Levitical era, an animal had to be sacrificed in place of a sinning Israelite. There were different kinds of offerings, but the aspect covered in today’s text dwells on the burnt offering, where a bullock, a sheep, a goat or a fowl is vicariously killed. The blood is sprinkled around the altar and the remains are burnt as a burnt offering. The offering is described as “an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD” (Leviticus 1:17). This highlights the acceptance of the sacrifice, in place of the person being cleansed from sin and guilt.

We need to bear in mind that this provision was not perfect; otherwise it would not have been changed thereafter under the New Testament. The vicious cycle of sin and offerings continued till Christ died on the cross to “purge our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.” The temporary arrangement of offering animals for sin in the Old Testament, typifies and foretells the eventual death of Jesus Christ, described in Scriptures as the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8). As we read through the subject of the Levitical sacrifices, some might find the incidents of animals being slaughtered on daily basis a little graphic. This should instead, make us see and feel the gravity of our sins. Sin is so odious in the sight of God that it requires the shedding of blood, before an atonement can be made and accepted. It is therefore incumbent on all those desirous of God’s pardon from sin and its consequences to take solace in the spotless blood of the Lamb of God.

TOPIC: WHEN IN DOUBT, DON'T

MESSAGE:
In 1979, during a tense Cold War midnight shift, a young radar operator in the Soviet Union saw what appeared to be five US missiles headed toward Moscow. The protocol demanded immediate retaliation. But the officer, Stanislav Petrov, was not fully convinced. His gut, his training, and his reason battled within. He made a bold decision: he did nothing. Moments later, it was confirmed to be a false alarm. His restraint spared the world a nuclear war.

In Leviticus 10:16, Moses “diligently sought the goat of the sin offering” but found it burnt, not eaten. This was no trivial error. God had commanded that the priests eat the sin offering in a holy place. Moses was understandably angry. But Aaron, still grieving the sudden deaths of his sons Nadab and Abihu for offering strange fire, replied with trembling honesty in verse 19: “Such things have befallen me: and if I had eaten the sin offering today, should it have been accepted in the sight of the Lord?”

Aaron did not rush. He did not act out of habit or fear. In his sacred uncertainty, he paused. He refrained. He waited. When in doubt, he did not. And Moses was content.

Expectedly, the world and circumstances sometimes present us a scenario that may instigate impulsive reactions. But we must learn not to allow the situation to becloud our sense of reasoning and sound judgment. When the instructions are holy and the atmosphere heavy, caution is not cowardice; it is consecration.

The fire on the altar is not ours to manipulate. When grieving, wounded, or uncertain, just pause. Do not preach because it is your turn. Do not sing because it is expected. Do not respond to conflict when your spirit is not settled. Like Aaron, when your soul is unsure, ask: “Would this be accepted in the sight of the Lord?”

Better a delayed offering than a defiled one. Heaven honours those who reverence His holiness above performance.

So next time you find yourself in the holy tension between duty and doubt, remember Aaron. Remember Petrov. Remember the wisdom of waiting. Let reverence rule. Let silence speak. And let God be pleased.

TOPIC: WARPED WEALTH

MESSAGE:
In 2002, a man won a foreign lottery fraud jackpot he had not entered, but a phone call told him otherwise. In his desperation for quick wealth, he sold property, borrowed heavily, and sent it all as “processing fees.” Within months, he was bankrupt, humiliated, and attempted su***de. He wanted wealth without work, and it broke him.

Scripture teaches that prosperity preachers often deny: labour is the path to lasting gain. Diligence, not declarations. Integrity, not indulgence. But today, many pulpits bypass patience and promote “sudden breakthroughs”, a spirituality of shortcuts that mocks divine order. Our passage provides instructive guidelines on how to avoid heartaches associated with inordinate ambition and compulsive tendency to be wealthy without obeying the laws of prosperity.

The fool mocks instruction (v.1), rushes to shame (v.5), and suffers want (v.18). Prosperity without principle is poison. The riches that rain without roots will rot. God honours steady hands and upright hearts, not empty confessions that skip the sweat of obedience.

Diligence is dying in many denominations globally, not because God has changed, but because many preachers have. We now offer shortcuts to success, bypassing the narrow road of obedience, hard work, and integrity. Many so-called Christians now run after sermons that emphasise harvests with no sowing, mansions with no mission, and abundance with no accountability.

As believers, we must beware of the doctrine that exalts desire but despises discipline. The Spirit does not bless laziness dressed in religious language. God honours those who rise early, who labour quietly, who build slowly, and who refuse to bend their principles for profit.

The Scripture makes it clear that the cross is not a lottery ticket. True prosperity, spiritual and material, flows from righteousness and hard work. The diligent do not just dream; they do. They plough through mornings of obscurity to reap evenings of honour. Beware of sermons that glamorise gain but despise discipline. The Lord who feeds the birds still commands them to fly and seek their food.

God is not against wealth, but He is against worshipping it. He is not against increase, but He detests iniquity in its pursuit. So if you must prosper, do so with patience. If you must rise, rise with righteousness. For only what is built by truth shall stand.

TOPIC: AT THY WORD!

9. Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

10. So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

11. And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

12. And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

13. And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

14. For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.

15. And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

16. And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

MESSAGE:
Prophet Elijah’s dramatic entry into Scripture turned out to be as eventful as his life was right up to the point when he was caught up to heaven in a chariot of fire. The Bible brings him forth first as the harbinger of God’s judgment of drought upon Israel under the reign of the evil King Ahab. Next, God shields him from the ensuing three-and-a-half-year famine, keeping him by a stream to be fed by birds. When the water dries up, God dispatches His servant to Zarephath where He has “commanded a widow woman there to sustain [him]”. The scene then shifts to the home of the poor woman hard hit by the starvation in the land. With an only son, she was preparing the last meal before death.

Truly, the circumstances by the widow’s reckoning suggested finality. When Elijah asked for food, she said: “As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” But Elijah knew that God’s word was not death for the place where He had sent him on a mission. God’s word would stand no matter what seems contrary.

God wrought a great miracle when the woman dwelt on the word of God, the same way Apostle Peter declared he would drop the net at the word of Jesus, leading him to experience a “boat-sinking miracle”. All the miracles attributed to Elijah were “according to the word of the LORD.”

With the whole world and its nations and governments reeling under failed and failing economic, political and philosophical ideologies and strategies such as the northern kingdom of Israel faced in the days of the Zarephath widow, mankind can only be delivered by the same God that came to the woman’s aid. God demands total trust in His word as revealed to us by Jesus Christ.

Many suffer and lack because of the failure to take God at His word. For those who stand firmly on His word, even in the face of overwhelming opposition, His word will never fail them. Learn to take God at His word and unlock the manifold blessings undergirding His sacred will.

MESSAGE:
Faced with the cream of renowned evangelists and Christian leaders the world over, Billy Graham once stunned the audience as he narrated his ministry experiences. He said: “Let me tell you: every time I stand before the congregation of God’s people to preach, I tremble and my knees wobble!” The leaders wondered at the incongruity of his submission: how can such a great preacher who has enthralled millions with his powerful sermons exhibit trembling and wobbling knees? Then he went on to describe, not fear and stage fright, but intense humility and meekness as he felt inadequate for the daunting task to which God had called him. He relied on God for strength, not on his own eloquence.

This beautifully reenacts Moses’ feeling of inadequacy when God sent him to deliver the enslaved Israelites from their 400-year captivity in Egypt. Moses was troubled. Conscious of his own weaknesses, he expressed fear about the Lord’s call for him to lead Israel out of bo***ge. But God simply asked Moses, “What is that in your hand?” The Lord shifted Moses’ attention away from his anxiety about the future and suggested he noticed what was right in his hand — a shepherd’s staff. God showed him that He could use this ordinary staff to perform miracles as a sign for unbelieving people. As Moses' trust in God grew, so did the magnitude of miracles God worked through him.

For each deficiency that Moses highlighted, God had a satisfying and abundant provision. This is also true of believers today. When God calls you to do something, He intentionally provides all you need to accomplish the task. "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Christ" (Philippians 1:6).

Instructively, God's instruments almost always confound the wise and mighty. With Moses, it was a "shepherd's rod". With David, it was " five smooth stones". In the ministry of Jesus, it was " but five loaves and two fishes". With Samson, it was the " jaw bone of an ass". The unmistakable import of all these is in the reality of the sovereignty of God. He does what He chooses to do through any instrument of His choice. You do not need to sell yourself short. If God has called you to a task, rest assured that he will equip you for it.

TOPIC: POWER OF GRACEFUL SPEECH

KEY VERSE:
"To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men" - (Titus 3:2).

3. For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

MESSAGE:
Charles Spurgeon and Dr Joseph Parker were great friends and preachers in the 19th century but had a sharp misunderstanding based on misrepresentation of what Dr. Parker said about the poor condition of children admitted to Spurgeon’s orphanage. It was mis-reported to Spurgeon that Parker had criticised the orphanage itself. Without double-checking from his friend, Spurgeon used his pulpit to attack Parker in return. Journalists and people flocked to Parker’s church the next Sunday to hear his rebuttal. They were however surprised about the gracious manner Parker handled it. When it was time for Dr. Parker to speak, he slowly got up and went to the pulpit, quietly cleared his throat and said, “Brother Spurgeon is sick today and cannot preach. This is the day when he takes up an offering for his orphans. May I suggest that we take up that offering for him in our church, for he’s doing a great work, and I know all of us would like to have a part in it” the crowd was delighted. The ushers had to empty the collection plates three times. Later that week, there was a knock at Parker’s study. It was Spurgeon. “You know Parker, you have practised grace on me. You have given me not what I deserved, you have given me what I needed.”

Dr. Parker’s graceful comment resonates with Apostle Paul’s words to Titus and the Church in this passage, especially in a world that is now bereft of grace in our speech. Paul encouraged believers to embody and demonstrate qualities that reflect the transforming power of the gospel, namely, respect to authority, obedience and readiness for good deeds. He also warned against slander and encouraged them to be peaceful and gentle.

This timeless exhortation is not just for personal piety but for the purpose of demonstrating the impact and fruit of the gospel through our public behaviour. When we choose gentleness over aggression, peace over conflict, and respect over slander, we mirror the character of Christ and stand as beacons of grace in a tumultuous world. These choices and attitudes serve as testimonies to our faith and powerful demonstrations of the gospel’s work within us.

TOPIC: HE WHO REMEMBERS

3. And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.

4. Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.

5. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:

MESSAGE:
Martin Luther King, Jr said, “The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends towards Justice.” Take it or leave it, there is a payday for all. Justice will catch up with everyone for their actions. It may be delayed in the sight of men, but God will recompense all with equity in His own time. Let the irreverent sinner beware.

Israel is also admonished in the text to remember the Law of Moses. The passage also highlights God’s promise to send Elijah before the dreadful day of the Lord. John the Baptist was sent to herald the first advent of Christ. He announced the coming of the Son of God as the Lamb that was sent to take away the sin of the world. Israel heard but did not take heed to the words of John. What they heard did not profit them because it was not mixed with faith. They eventually suffered untold woes because of their impenitence.

This prophecy has an extended meaning for the Gentile nations. The climactic point of the great tribulation will witness again the ministry of Elijah and another witness. Yet Israel and the Gentile world will not heed the fiery messages of the two witnesses. God’s word will, however, be fulfilled regardless of the unbelief of the godless. And He will dispense His judgment justly.

Moses is not here today, but the compassionate God has sent His Son Jesus Christ to us. This is the era of unfathomable grace. The wise will heed Christ’s word and bend his will in reverence to the Lord’s call. Embrace the outstretched arms of God’s Son inviting you today to the paradise of peace. Don’t tarry in unbelief. The Sun of righteousness will come again, no longer as God’s Lamb but as the fiery Lion of the tribe of Judah. He will judge the unrighteous and reward the righteous.

7. Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

8. Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

9. Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

MESSAGE:
Mary Marty retells a parable from the Eye of the Needle newsletter: “A holy man was engaged in his morning meditation under a tree whose roots stretched out over the riverbank. During his meditation he noticed that the river was rising, and a scorpion caught in the roots was about to drown. He crawled out on the roots and reached down to free the scorpion, but every time he did so, the scorpion struck back at him. An observer came along and said to the holy man, ‘Don’t you know that’s a scorpion, and it’s in the nature of a scorpion to want to sting?’ To which the holy man replied, ‘That may well be, but it is my nature to save, and must I change my nature because the scorpion does not change its nature?’”.—

This passage offers a rich blueprint for Christian relationships, beginning in the home and extending into the wider community of faith. Peter instructs husbands to live with their wives in an understanding and honouring way, by showing emotional sensitivity, spiritual partnership, and shared dignity, while recognising them as co-heirs of God’s grace, so as to avoid the consequence of hindered prayers.

Itemising the qualities expected among Christian communities as, having unity of mind, sharing in each other’s struggles, loving one another as family, having tender heart and humble mind, Apostle Peter concludes by giving the challenge of “not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing...” a character trait that exemplifies Christ who blessed those that crucified Him.

Therefore, whether in marriage or family, we are to commit to treating others with understanding and grace. We are not to respond to insults, betrayals, or mistreatment with vengeance. Instead, we are to bless, speaking well, praying for, and seeking good for those who hurt us. When we bless instead of curse, love instead of retaliate, we live out the gospel and step into the flow of God’s blessing for our own lives.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Blessing those who hurt us makes us to resemble Christ.
