MESSAGE:
The conversion of Augustine of Hippo (386 AD) was as instructive and profound as his life and writings. Augustine, a renowned philosopher and theologian, struggled with his faith and moral dilemmas for many years. Although exposed to some religious and philosophical materials, the vacuum and void for God was palpable in his heart, and his quest for rest through a more profound experience increased his curiosity and search for answers to his longing. His turning point came when he heard a childlike voice saying, “Take and read.” He opened the Bible to Romans 13:13,14, which had a profound impact on him. Guided by the teachings of Ambrose, the Bishop of Milan, Augustine embraced Christianity and became one of its most influential figures during the Middle Age era.

The narrative in our text summarises Christ’s redemptive sacrifice for mankind. Philip, the Evangelist, was commissioned by God to reach out to the Ethiopian eu**ch, who eventually got converted and was baptised in water along the way. The conversation began with a pivotal question from the eu**ch, who needed someone more knowledgeable to guide him through the passage of Scripture he was reading at that time. Having the right quest followed by the right question produced the right answer and spiritual satisfaction for the Ethiopian official. How many in our world today are busy searching for the right thing in the wrong place!

This quest for something deeper, higher and more experiential has never left mankind. In a similar vein, the question has lingered on the lips of many willing and potential disciples of Christ, waiting endlessly for someone, somewhere, to explain the life-saving gospel to them. Saint Augustine writes in his Confessions, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” His popular quote captures something that resonates deep within the human person. Restlessness is that desire to be filled and be fulfilled. The Ethiopian eu**ch was driven by this quest to travel from Africa to Israel on a religious pilgrimage in search of spiritual repose and comfort in Jerusalem’s temple worship.

Many people are confused and despondent as a result of the disappointment they encountered from false preachers or religious merchants. God is looking for more Philips today to step forward and step up, join the chariot, and guide sincere seekers to the source of living water—the true and transformational gospel that gives them life, satisfaction, and lasting fulfilment in eternity.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Believers must be sensitive to secure and not to scare away sincere seekers.

TOPIC: ON THE MOVE FOR CHRIST

MESSAGE:
English churchman of the 18th Century, John Wesley, travelled over 250,000 miles throughout the British Isles and beyond to deliver the gospel of Christ to multitudes who braved the elements to hear him. They responded to Wesley’s own scant consideration for personal comfort in the quest to fulfil the demand of the great commission. Active till 1791 when he died, the evangelist journeyed largely on horseback in a hectic annual schedule that took him through craggy mountainous regions, valleys, plains and riverine territories.

Several centuries before Wesley, Apostle Peter had demonstrated that obeying Christ’s commandment to tell the world about Him was not a stationary or closet affair. It entailed the strategy of a peripatetic lifestyle. Peter left Jerusalem and “passed throughout all quarters.” He followed in the footsteps of his Master, “who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” The apostle’s trips were packed with stunning outcomes: edification of the saints, healing a bedridden man, bringing back to life a dead woman and leading crowds to Christ.

Reassuringly, the principles of effective evangelism laid down by our Lord that worked for Peter and Wesley are still standing tall and beckoning today’s believers who desire to sn**ch sinners from the path of perdition they are treading. The Lord did not entertain inaction; nor did He brook a monastic lifestyle. He sought fresh ventures to preach in new frontiers. Unafraid of obstacles, Jesus moved from place to place to teach, heal and bring hope to the lost. He knew He had limited time. So He optimised scarce resources.

In our age marked by the closeness of Christ’s Second Coming and the deluge of false doctrines, the Church and genuine followers of Christ must leave their cosy corners and mount aggressive great commission campaigns everywhere. It must be a global blitzkrieg taking place in communities, neighbourhoods and nations over all strata of the media. We must dominate the social sphere with loud proclamation that Christ is the answer to the crisis threatening to devour man.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: We need Christ’s unfailing evangelism fervour to win the lost for heaven.

TOPIC: SEEKING CHRIST FOR WRONG REASONS

MESSAGE:
Dr. A. W. Tozer, in his book, The Pursuit of God, wrote, “The modern scientist has lost God amidst the wonders of His world; we Christians are in real danger of losing God amidst the wonders of His word.” Many people who know about Christ have failed to recognise him as the Saviour of the world.

In our text, the Jewish religious leaders wanted Jesus crucified based on trumped-up charges. Pilate, who was the judge, pronounced Christ guiltless but treated Him as a tool to pacify the Jews and mend his broken relationship with Herod. On his part, Herod was anxious to see Christ only as a miracle worker. Like multitudes today, he was a curious seeker eager to observe supernatural signs and wonders.

Many people still come to Christ for reasons less than why He came into the world: to seek and save the lost. Some see Christ in the mould of a Father Christmas, who merely supplies their needs, without first seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness. No wonder the prayers for promotion, healing, deliverance, material supply, and victory over enemies usually echo louder than the prayer of repentance in churches of today. Some attend church services for emotional experiences or simply to be in the right social or political circle. Others, like Governor Felix, are eager to discuss religious matters but postpone their salvation to a convenient time that may never come.

Let us remember that salvation from sin and its consequences should be the primary reason for seeking Christ. Other benefits are mere icing on the cake.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Smart people, like Zacchaeus, seek Christ for the greatest miracle - the salvation of their soul.

TOPIC: POWER OF POSITIVE VALUES

MESSAGE:
There was the story of a child who was given a complex jigsaw puzzle to work on. In a short time, the pieces were all put together. A visiting friend was amazed and asked, ‘How did you do that so fast?’ ‘Oh, you see, there is a picture of Jesus on the other side, and I just put that one together.’ The complexities are adjusted when the Lord Jesus is given His rightful place in the home.

The home setting is God’s initiative. He, therefore, remains the Alpha and Omega in all issues, including those concerning the home. He is the repository of wisdom for all family matters. If given the right as the Head of the family, love, joy, peace, harmony, wellness, and progress abound and flourish. The reverse is the case when God is not in control of a family. The values taught at home determine the behaviour of members of different families outside; hence, the axiom: Charity begins at home. Children are a heritage of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is His reward.

The Holy Bible, God’s inerrant word, remains the standard for valuable guidelines on proper parenting that can transform families and society. We cannot get parenting right if its precepts are despised or neglected. People who wish to pass on godly values to their generations and add value to the larger society must adhere to biblical teachings on all aspects of life. People like Moses, Samuel, and Timothy were products of good home training. In contemporary times, we have the likes of Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights leader who credited his father, Martin Luther King Sr., and his mother, Alberta Williams King, for instilling in him a strong sense of morality, justice and compassion.

A sage has correctly said that there is nothing more influential in a child’s life than the moral power of a quiet example. For children to take morality seriously, they must see adults who live by high moral standards. We cannot leave this significant role solely in the hands of caregivers, school tutors, or the government. There is no irredeemable situation with God; whatever your situation, trust and pray, believing there will be light at the end of the tunnel.

TOPIC: PRAISE AFTER PERILS

48. It is God that avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me,

49. And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.

50. Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.

51. He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.

MESSAGE:
Not many people sufficiently know how to praise God for who He is nor do many offer thanksgiving to Him for all He does. Unknown to them, worship and thanksgiving attract further multi-dimensional blessings from God’s exalted throne of grace and mercy.

Our text today consists of the closing lines of the song of praise that David offered at the end of his life. Running through the song is the unmistakable strong undercurrent of appreciation from the lips of this fallen yet faithful king to the ever-faithful God. In putting the song together, David paraded the exploits, conquests, and victories garnered through God’s providence. Observers might see David more visibly in the larger picture but not the psalmist of Israel. He knew that it was the Lord who made him strong.

He chronicles God’s inexhaustible mercies that subdued his enemies under his footstool, kept his own people well under his leadership, gave him an upper hand over his adversaries, and delivered him from bloodthirsty Saul, mischievous Doeg, ambitious Absalom, malicious Ahitophel, insubordinate Joab and rebellious Shimei. In return for his divine deliverance, David exultantly declares, “Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name”. David’s heart had an outburst of praise and thanksgiving for the Lord, who had become his rock, fortress, deliverer, stronghold, refuge, and Saviour. Notably, David’s life, marked by numerous testimonies, was characterised by his unwavering trust in God and absolute submission to His will. As his life failed to an end, he stood tall, looked back and chronicled God’s faithfulness.

Today’s saints are not in any way different from David. Can you also allow the Lord to sit on the throne of your heart as you completely submit to Him in adversity or prosperity, in commendation or condemnation, in peace or war? Can you look back and see how the Lord has been your Saviour and deliverer from the fiendish clutches of sin, your Sanctifier who sets free from the propensity to sin, your peace and Comforter in chaotic times and amid crisis?

We must, like David, let go in joyful, exuberant praise and acknowledge His faithfulness despite our human inadequacies.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Praise to God gets to Him as a precious sweet-smelling offering.

TOPIC: A DANGEROUS MISSTEP

MESSAGE:
World Report 2024 indicates that the number of people living in foreign countries has increased three-fold since 1970. This trend has been encouraged by globalisation and uneven regional development. Like Jacob and his family in today’s text, the search for greener pastures has uprooted many people, sometimes with disastrous consequences.

In the text, Jacob’s daughter, Dinah, finds herself in a foreign land. The inquisitive nature of the youth propelled her to explore the land. Sadly, she was ambushed and defiled by Shechem, the son of Hamor, a prince of the Hivites. Hamor quickly proposed a marriage alliance with Israel to redeem the situation. The offer appears attractive enough to appease Jacob: a fat dowry, an opportunity for investments and blending with a prominent Canaanite family. Simeon and Levi, the brothers of Dinah, deceptively prescribed circumcision as a religious ritual to cement the marriage alliance but used it as a tool to revenge their sister’s defilement.

Many families have faced a similar dilemma as Jacob and his children today. Some spinsters and bachelors, born and raised in the church, in their desperation to settle down and raise a family, feel that it is better to marry just anyone rather than remain single for life. There are also those who, in their careless moments, have ended up with an unplanned pregnancy. They are often faced with the dilemma of following Hamor’s face-saving option or obeying God’s commandment on marriage.

However, the scriptural standard remains clear: a Christian should not be unequally yoked with an unbeliever in marriage, time and circumstances notwithstanding. Believers are peculiar people, and marrying unbelievers would erase their distinct identity. And as God warned the children of Israel under Moses, an unequal yoke can lead believers to turn from following God; thereby, provoking His anger. Believers should trust and obey God when choosing a spouse and during the entire marriage process.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Marriages not built on the Rock (Christ) suffer a fall when the wind and flood come.

TOPIC: AN INGLORIOUS END

27. And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh's house?

28. And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?

29. Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?

30. Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

36. And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.

MESSAGE:
C.S. Lewis, a British writer and an Anglican lay theologian, once saw this epitaph on a tombstone: “Here lies an atheist, all dressed up but with nowhere to go.”

In today’s passage, a man of God prophesied of the inglorious deaths of Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, for acts of irreverence for God. This eventually came to pass shortly after. Hophni and Phinehas were all dressed up as priests, bearing the Ark of the Covenant on their shoulders. They summarily died in battle, with no hope of eternal life awaiting them. Eli was the chief priest over the Tabernacle, as well as a judge in Israel. His sons (Hophni and Phinehas), as children of the high priest, also joined in the holy service. These sons of Eli compelled the priest’s servants to take the meat of Israel’s sacrifices in the tabernacle by force, before burning the fat as instituted in God’s law. In addition to extortion, the sons of Eli were also guilty of sexual immorality with the women who gathered at the entrance to the tabernacle. Naturally, the Lord was very displeased with this sinful behaviour and sent a man of God to deliver a damning message to Eli. The Lord said that Eli and his house would be cut off from His favour, and that, as a sign of the truth of this prophecy, both sons would die on the same day.

Death is certain. It is a necessary end. But those who die while in active rebellion against God’s commands will face a grim eternity. These two sons of the high priest of Israel should have known better. They should have known that a holy calling cannot save an unholy man unless he repents. However, instead of amending their ways, they became so selfish and rebellious that Eli, their father, could no longer control them. Although Eli cautioned Hophni and Phinehas, he had not done everything he could to decisively correct their bad behaviour. Eli was guilty of neglecting his parental duties towards his children because "he restrained them not." Eli should have excluded his children from the service in the sanctuary of God altogether. This is a warning to Christian parents who indulge their children and allow them to occupy positions in the church despite their manifest misdemeanours.

God is jealous over His house. He is no respector of persons. Though He is patient and expects the penitent to return to Him, there is a limit to His patience. Those who are encouraged by delusional ideologists to resist God and disdain His word, thinking there are no consequences, should have a rethink after seeing how those illusions were quickly expelled by the swift judgement handed down to Hophni and Phinehas.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: It is a horrible venture to dare God or tempt Him.

TOPIC: GET HEAVENLY WISDOM

MESSAGE:
Martin Luther once shared a thought-provoking story about two goats that met on a narrow bridge over deep water. With no room to backtrack or fight, one goat decided to lie down, allowing the other to pass safely. The moral here? Strive for peace, even if it means setting aside your own pride, but never compromise your principles. True wisdom is gentle, pure, and considerate, always showing respect for others.

In this passage, James explains his message about the tongue by illustrating what a truly wise person looks like—someone whose wisdom shines through their good deeds. This worldly wisdom is not just unspiritual; it is demonic, creating chaos and all sorts of evil. On the other hand, heavenly wisdom is pure, peace-loving, gentle, approachable, and overflowing with mercy and good deeds. It is impartial and sincere, leading to a rich harvest of righteousness.

The danger of living by worldly wisdom is devastating—it can blind people to its harmful effects, steering them away from God. Those who rely on earthly wisdom often end up justifying negative traits, such as envy, hypocrisy, arrogance, and conflict, mistakenly believing these are necessary for survival. This kind of thinking is spiritually deadly. In our relationships, pursuits in life and career advancements, we need wisdom to navigate challenges that will come our way. Within the church, those who claim to be wise but are driven by an insatiable desire for power create division and inflate their own egos, proving that their so-called wisdom doesn’t come from above.

In contrast, heavenly wisdom is life-giving. It guides those who possess it along the path of salvation, moulding them into portraits of holiness and righteousness. When Scripture tells us, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding” (Proverbs 4:7), it encourages us to pursue the wisdom from above—wisdom that not only saves but also preserves us for God’s eternal kingdom.
