A welcome break in the rain today meant we could finally enjoy a bit of blue sky and sunshine for sheep checks ☀️🐑

The moment I stepped into the field, Nibbles came charging over like she’d been separated from me for months rather than a few hours.
She then proceeded to use my head as a scratching post before demanding an unacceptable amount of fuss, leaving me absolutely soaked in the process.

I’m beginning to suspect she’s actually a Labrador trapped in a sheep suit.

Addy was equally delighted to be back out.
She spent the entire visit tearing around the field collecting sticks, handing out unsolicited kisses to Nibbles and generally behaving like she’d personally arranged the sunshine herself 🐾☀️

The lambs are looking fantastic - growing far too quickly for my liking and developing that wonderful confidence that usually means they’re about to start making questionable life choices.

Meanwhile, the mamas seem considerably happier now they’ve lost their winter coats and the weather has finally cooled down a bit. I imagine carrying around a wet fleece in this weather was about as enjoyable as wearing a soggy duvet.

We finished our checks with one very soggy cocker spaniel who, despite looking like she’d just completed crossing the Bristol Channel, was more than ready to head off and “help” check the rams next 🐏🌧️

Whether the rams appreciated the assistance remains to be seen 🤣

It’s been a bit quiet on the Oakleaf page lately.

Not because we’ve suddenly become organised, sensible farmers. Quite the opposite.

The last few weeks have consisted mainly of two broken vehicles, obsessive camera checks and the sort of daily chaos that makes you wonder whether taking up knitting might have been a better life choice 🧶

Yesterday’s activities involved me and the boys gathering up all the mamas and babies for shearing, hauling the creep feeder back up the field and getting the stable sorted for the rams’ temporary bachelor pad 🐏

By the evening, the ewes, future mamas and rams had all been relieved of their fleeces. Given the weather lately, I imagine they’re feeling considerably less offended by life today.

Massive thank you to Ollie for helping Alex with the rams. At over 100kg a piece and with the subtlety of a runaway tractor, they’re not always the easiest lads to move around 🥵

And a huge thank you to Micheál Nolan for shearing the flock. It’s not every day a professional jockey ends up in your sheep shed, but given the size of some of our rams, we figured if anyone was qualified to handle animals you could potentially ride, it was probably him! 🤣🐏

Now…

Normal people would assume that once the sheep were sheared, everyone had gone home and the yard was shut up for the night, that would be the end of the day’s excitement.

Those people clearly don’t own sheep.

At some point after we’d all left, Cookie decided that hurdles were more of a suggestion than a physical barrier and launched herself over one for a solo nighttime tour of the driveway.

Nothing gets the heart rate up quite like seeing an escapee on the camera.

Having just put the children to bed, I took great delight in announcing, “It’s your turn.” 🤭

Cue Alex being summoned back to the farm while Her Majesty enjoyed her freedom march around the yard.

Eventually the escapee was returned to custody and peace was restored.

For approximately twelve hours.

Today’s task saw me and Archie head up to the rams’ field where Sprocket had apparently been conducting his own landscaping project. What should have been electric fencing was instead a tangled ball of wire stretching across half the field like some sort of agricultural crime scene.

Several hours and a fair amount of language later, the fencing is standing again and ready for the boys to move back tomorrow.

Honestly, sometimes farming feels less like livestock management and more like being a full-time event coordinator for a group of woolly idiots with absolutely no regard for health and safety.

That said, weeks like this are also a reminder of how lucky we are.

Whether it’s friends helping move sheep, neighbours lending a hand, family mucking in or fellow farmers turning up when needed, nobody really does this alone. Behind every flock is usually a small army of people helping hold the whole thing together.

And thank goodness for that.

Because if it was left entirely to us and the sheep, Cookie would still be touring the driveway and Sprocket would probably be halfway to Wales dragging 400 metres of electric fence behind him.

After reviewing finances, flock plans and the ongoing emotional trauma caused by owning TWO (broken) Land Rovers simultaneously 🙄… we’ve decided we won’t be offering spring lamb in 2027 😔

Those of you who had your name down for next year we apologise, we will be back 2028 💥 🐑

Instead, we’re going to focus on the future of Oakleaf - putting everything into our future mamas and continuing to grow the flock for the years ahead 🐑💚

THAT SAID… we do still have some burgers, sausages and individual cuts available from this year if anyone would like to grab some before they disappear 👀

Although… this is me we’re talking about… so if random lambs happen to appear later in the year because I’ve gone full feral shepherdess mode again, nobody act surprised 🤣

Thank you all so much for the continued support.
Every order, comment, share, recommendation and message genuinely means more than people probably realise.

The flock might be small… but the plans definitely aren’t 🐑✨

Keep watching this space 🌿

It’s been a bit quiet on here lately… but life behind the scenes has been anything but 🙃

After a 200 mile round trip to drop the kids off to Nannie’s on Friday night, Saturday started with sheep moves, electric fence, counting heads (twice… because sheep 🙃), and the usual Oakleaf chaos…

Then it was a quick turnaround, swap the wellies for something slightly more civilised, and off to Bristol for a rare night away - just as adults for once 🤠✨

Went to see Cooper Alan and what a night it was… proper country, proper atmosphere, and yes… cider firmly in hand 🍻

Although… you can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy… rocking his Back British Farming t-shirt in the O2 like he hadn’t just come straight from the fields 😂

After another 200 mile round trip Sunday to pick the boys back up it’s back to reality (and sheep) today… but nights like that hit different when you’ve earned them 💚🌿

18/04/2026

Days like this feel a bit different 🌿

Moved the two rams back to their field - straight in, straight out, no fuss.
Everything just… easy for once 🙃

The boys back collecting eggs again this weekend 🥚 and getting to enjoy them afterwards 🥓 🍳

Finished tagging and banding the last of the babies and turned them out with the others, and stood for a minute just watching them bounce round the paddock in the sunshine ☀️🐑

There’s a real peace in keeping your world small and focusing on what actually matters.

And now lambing’s behind us, it’s nice to actually pause for a second and appreciate it all - the teamwork, the graft… still smiling and still stronger than ever.

At times we’ve just been passing ships in the wind… juggling kids, house, work, sheep, puppy training and lambing - just co-existing to get through it all.
But somehow we always find our way straight back to where we were, like nothing ever shifted.

Because when you’ve got a good partner beside you, everything just works that bit better 💚

So for now, we’ll just enjoy a bit of time together… before the next sheep-related event inevitably keeps us on our toes again 🐑✨

Chaos in the barn this morning… and honestly I wasn’t emotionally prepared for it 🫠

Bella apparently skipped planning permission and embraced her inner interior designer…
Rearranging hurdles - like she’s on Grand Designs: Sheep Edition - to give herself a full unauthorised extension 🙃

I’m still trying to work out how she even managed it, considering I struggled to put it back together and needed a full engineering degree, a pep talk, and possibly a stiff drink 🤣

Meanwhile Jen has officially decided she’s too grown up for bottle top-ups 💁🏻‍♀️
She’s caught up with her brother, feeding brilliantly, and Bella continues to be Super Mum…
…despite also being the reason I nearly lost the will to live before midday 💀

Over the other side, Ginger was minding her own business with Honey and Ada…
(all three denying any knowledge of the morning’s structural alterations 👀 - suspicious behaviour if you ask me)

The other mamas and babies were happily out grazing like nothing ever happened…
while I stood there questioning every life choice that led me there 🫥

Once feeds were done, it was off to the next field to FINALLY start mucking out the stable…
because lambing chaos has been saying ✨not today✨ for the last however many weeks 🙃

Archie got the joy of a wheelbarrow with a flat tyre - character building or child labour?
Who knows… but it’s back to school Monday so we’re making the most of it 🤣

Buster took on the delicate task of cutting wool off the electric fence where Lily has been treating it like a suggestion rather than a boundary…
He nearly took me out a few times, but I dodged it like my life depended on it…
because it probably did 😬

And just like that…
the field is ready for the two rams to return to their rightful home 🐏🐏

Here’s hoping they cause the landlady slightly less trouble than Lily did…
(no promises though 🤣)

14/04/2026

Well… the weather has officially turned feral 🌧️💨

Sideways rain, howling wind, and the kind of conditions that make you question your life choices… like owning sheep 🤣

Out in the paddock, Lily and Joan have chosen violence.
No warning. No build-up. Just straight into head-to-head combat like it’s a pay-per-view event and I’m somehow the unpaid referee 🥊🐑

Meanwhile, back in the barn - a completely different universe…

🐑 The 4 newest members are living in absolute luxury.
Warm, dry, bouncing around like caffeinated toddlers, completely oblivious to the apocalypse happening outside

🍼 And little Jen…
Our tiniest diva is on top-up feeds - fuelled by Nibbles’ ridiculously overachieving milk supply, which has been very professionally harvested like some kind of black-market dairy operation 😏
Bella’s doing her best on a single-teat system, but demand is currently exceeding supply… so here we are - but let’s face it, not exactly shy of a bottle lamb are we 👀

🌧️ The slightly older lambs outside are now experiencing character building.
Pretty sure they’re all thinking:
“we were inside the other day living our best lives - what is THIS betrayal?!”

And me?
Running on caffeine and poor decisions…
Standing in the doorway watching sheep fight in the rain, while convincing myself there isn’t a pile of washing waiting for me at home 🫠

Farm life. Wouldn’t change it.
House life?
Questionable 🤣

Today’s little side quest… 🐑🥛

Nibbles is doing the absolute most and producing far too much milk for her single lamb 🙃

Great in theory… not so great when you’re staring down the risk of mastitis if it’s not managed properly.
So today’s job (and seemingly every day at the moment) was milking her off to keep everything comfortable and healthy 👌🏻

Now I wasn’t going to bother buying the Udderly EZ… thought we would manage just fine without it…

…but WOW.

What. A. Tool. 🤯

Safe to say it’s well and truly earned its place here - and probably paid for itself in one go 🙌🏻

We’ve now got:
✨ Gold standard colostrum (checked on the refractometer 💪🏻) safely stored in the freezer
✨ And around 2 litres of milk tucked away as well

Future lambs will be very grateful… even if it is a bit of a faff 😅 she’s such a good girl 🥰

All part of keeping things ticking over and doing right by them 💚

Turnout day 🌿

A few of the mamas and their babies made the move out into the paddock today... and honestly, this is what it's all about 💚

Sun shining, lambs bouncing like they've been plugged into the mains, full of life, full of attitude, and absolutely zero concept of personal space 🐑

There's something pretty special about just standing there for a minute, watching them explore, test their legs and cause chaos in the best way possible.
Strong, happy, and exactly how they should be 🥰

Meanwhile, away from the chaos... Easter Monday done properly.
A family roast lamb dinner with mother, and the quiet satisfaction of knowing exactly where it came from and how it was raised 💪🏻

From field to fork, as it should be 🍽️

Back to normality tomorrow... whatever that looks like during lambing season 😅
