When a customer told Phil from our Birchwood store that she was planning to walk to the bus stop with a pack of 24 soft drink cans balanced on top of her walking frame, he immediately stopped what he was doing and went to help.

The lady told him that a carer normally helps with her shopping, but they were away so she'd decided to "brave it" on her own. Whilst carrying her shopping to self checkouts he asked how she was getting home with the heavy shopping and she said she would get the bus. Phil wouldn't have any of it and, after helping her through the checkout, got her a seat and then arranged for a taxi to take her home.

Phil said: "She had trouble walking, so would have really struggled. It wouldn't have been safe to have the items balanced on her walking frame. I made sure I got all the shopping in the taxi for her before it left. She was very grateful, but I am always happy to help and support whenever and wherever I can."

A huge well done to community champion Alan from our Hunts Cross store who at the age of 64 marked the 30th anniversary of our Tickled Pink breast cancer campaign by losing 30lbs in weight and then running a half-marathon for the first time.

He dedicated the run at Aintree Racecourse to his mother-in-law Patricia, who sadly lost her battle with breast cancer 20 years ago. Alan joined Asda nine years ago, after working for 34 years as a mental health nurse. He said: “Patricia was a midwife and it was her who inspired me to go into nursing, so I dedicated this run to her. I wanted to do something for Tickled Pink as it’s an amazing cause and very personal to our family.

“My actual challenge was conceived whilst on holiday in January, when I became aware of my reflection in a lift and at first I thought it was distorted, but it wasn't! I accepted I needed to be more proactive with my weight and health. This was made even more important as in July 2019 I had been admitted to hospital after suffering a mild stroke. I've never run in my life, but I have done a lot of long distance cycling. If you put me on a bike I'd just cycle across the country and it wouldn't bother me so I thought I'd do something that would make me feel a bit uncomfortable, like running!”

Alan, who put his his weight loss down to healthy eating and exercise, now runs three times a week to keep in shape. His next challenge is to run the Chester Marathon on October 11, and then a 50km ultra marathon the year after.

"Being helpful is just in my nature" – that's what Mandy from our Glasshoughton store said after impressing everyone at the store by going out of her way to help a customer who was struggling on his first shopping trip after spending seven months in hospital.

The customer had been injured falling from a roof and called in at Asda on his first day after being discharged because he didn't have any food in the house. Mandy spotted he was shaky and didn't look well, so went over to help. After he explained his situation, Mandy sat him down in the cafe with a coffee while she packed all his groceries for him. And when she couldn't find a taxi to pick him up she even drove him home herself and took all his shopping in. Carers were due to visit later in the day.

Mandy said: "He was very grateful, but being helpful is just in my nature. If a member of my family was in the same position, I'd hope someone would help them too." Sandra, Asda Glasshoughton's customer manager, nominated Mandy for an Asda service superstar award for her actions. She said: "Her kindness, empathy, and willingness to go far beyond her role made a meaningful difference to a customer in a very difficult situation. She is a true credit to the team."

"The best service I have received in 40 years of going to an opticians" – that's what one customer said of optical colleague Emma from our Langley Mill store.

The customer got in touch with the store to thank Emma and to say how patient, caring and informative she was helping her choose a new pair of glasses. She said she would be telling all her family and friends about the wonderful customer service.

Emma said: "She had been elsewhere but said they hadn't been very helpful and just left her to it. I was just patient and kind with her, like I am with all our customers. Picking a pair of glasses is a big thing as you've got to feel confident and comfortable with them. It’s important that we give customers time and patience."

Optical manager Sarah said: “I have had many lovely comments about Emma. Many customers have told me how great she is and how professional she is. I am very lucky to have Emma in the optical team. She always goes above and beyond with her customer service and as a manager I could not ask for more.”

Sallyann from our Thurmaston store in Leicestershire saved the day for a customer who she spotted looking a bit lost trying to buy some underwear for his wife while she was in hospital – and she was so impressed that when she called in to thank Sallyann for her help she bought some more because she liked it so much!

Sallyann spotted the customer looking a bit overwhelmed in the store's George department, so asked if he was okay. He explained about his wife, so Sallyann took the time to help him find everything that he needed. She said: "The gentleman was in a bit of state and was panicking. He was on his way to see his wife with some of her underwear but he'd put a water bottle in the same bag and it had leaked everywhere! He just burst into tears. I gave a him a hug and told him not to worry and we would sort it.

"When the lady came into store after leaving hospital she came in to thank me which was lovely and to say that her husband had early onset dementia and would have been upset. She said she usually shops with a competitor but will be coming here from now on." Store manager Kajan said: "I am incredibly proud of the support and compassion Sallyann shows to our customers, truly living the Asda values in everything she does."

Tina from our Wolverhampton store has been holding fundraising events for Tickled Pink for years, but her next afternoon tea party will be an extra special one as it will be her first since finishing treatment for breast cancer.

Tina (pictured on the right) was diagnosed a week before Christmas last year following a routine mammogram and has since had surgery and radiotherapy treatment. She's a strong supporter of Tickled Pink, working alongside the store's community champion Angie, and often dresses up in pick tutus, wears pink wigs and has even had her head shaved to raise money. She said: "I'll be holding my next one on August 29 –and this year it's more personal. Tickled Pink is such an amazing good cause. It's been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster since I was diagnosed, I can tell you. Luckily I've had great support from Asda, my colleagues, friends and family, but I now feel privileged as I've beaten breast cancer."

Lynsey-Ann, Asda Wolverhampton's customer manager, said: "Tina's back in work with her usual bright and cheery self, no indication of the difficult few months that she has had. She's an inspiration to us all and a credit to her Asda Wolverhampton family. I admire how you never let anything dull your sparkle. We could definitely all learn from Tina."

When an elderly customer who lives on the top floor of a 10-storey block of flats couldn't get to the shops because the lift wasn't working Robyn and James from our Tamworth store came to the rescue.

The lady phoned the store asking for help placing an online order for the first time. Online team leader Robyn said: "She was getting quite distressed and upset, as there was no way she could get to the shops as she couldn't walk down the stairs. I felt terrible for her and told her not to worry. She gave me a list of the things she wanted – mainly big bottles of water and long-life milk – and I got a trolley and bought them for her. I just thought it was a nice thing to do."

Robyn asked her colleague James to deliver them to her – and he battled up the stairs to get to the customer's flat. He said: "It was a good workout! The lady was lovely and very appreciative. I stayed and had a chat with her and I think she appreciated a bit of social interaction. It was nice to think I made her day."

When the lift was back working the lady called into the store with a thank you card for the colleagues. Online manager Nicki said: "Until the lady came in I didn't know the full extent of what Robyn and James did, as they played it down as if it was just part of their job to help someone. I’m so proud of them both." Robyn was reimbursed by the store for her kindness.

I spent time getting involved with two litter picks these last couple of months, one hosted by Asda Tunstall and one hosted by Asda Wolstanton.

We had lots of fun while working hard. Together we collected 10 bags of rubbish! Thank you to everyone involved (the council, the police, Tunstall Together CIC and store colleagues).

I had the pleasure of presenting an Asda Foundation grant for £500 to Engage Communities CIC for a new football kit.

The whole team were lovely and were all very excited as they had just won their football game!

Engage Communities are a CIC who are committed to empowering and developing socially excluded and disadvantaged members of communities by using multi sports, dance, music, fashion and food to engage young people in positive, diversionary and personal development activities.

Mother's Day weekend in Asda Tunstall was spent raising money for Tickled Pink and raising awareness of the importance of checking yourself regularly and knowing what is your ‘normal’.

I had several customers donate who told me they have been through or are currently going through treatment for breast cancer. Asda Tunstall sends every single person love and support! Thank you to everyone who donated. Our Mother’s Day raffle was won by Kate, our lovely colleague who was very surprised and exclaimed, “I never win anything!”.

Me and Kayla had so much fun volunteering at Better Together’s new weekly baby session! Such a calming atmosphere with soft music, sensory lights, toys and books (along with biscuits and a brew).

We also took some of our BBC Play Time Fun Packs with activities and information to help support parents with their growing little ones.

I've been sharing information of the latest Asda Foundation Grant - Young Futures Fund.

Last year PPE 4 Community received £1,000 to support 45 young adults through entrepreneur workshops through our Young Futures Fund.

This year we are supporting mental health for teens with grants of £500 - £1000. Visit the Asda Foundation website for more information.

I also put fresh fruit on the table with a poster on why fruit is important in our daily diets, so that children can enjoy a healthy snack while they shop in store.

I was so pleased to visit Biddulph Methodist Church & The Victoria Centre to present them with an Asda Foundation grant for £14,625.

The building was filled with local residents spending time together in a loving, warm environment with such amazing staff and volunteers. There is also lots going on and there's even more in the works.

The money they received is going towards some building improvements such as new flooring, blinds to keep the heat in during the colder months, new kitchen facilities and storage all of which will help to make everything run more smoothly and and keep the building in top condition for all its locals' needs. I can’t wait to see the changes over the next few months. This is a great space for anyone needing a friendly face, someone to chat to or a new group to join. Thank you for making me feel so welcome.

I had another fantastic visit to Better Together Community Support where I presented them with an Asda Foundation grant for £600.

This really is such a lovely group of individuals who come together to support their local residents. I even got a little emotional seeing Kayla-May playing a game with one of the lovely elderly ladies, a game that I used to play with my Nan. Such a sweet (and competitive 😜) moment to witness.
