Walk through the Somerset countryside at this time of year and you’ll usually notice the first signs of autumn just beginning to appear.
This year, though, some of those changes seem to have arrived a little earlier.
After a particularly hot, dry summer, berries have ripened sooner, leaves have begun to turn and the landscape in places has taken on an autumnal feel ahead of the usual seasonal rhythm.
On the farm, these changes are a reminder of just how closely connected everything is. Hedgerows provide vital food and shelter for birds, insects and other wildlife, while the changing plants, fruits and fungi around us each play their part in the wider ecosystem.
Nature is always preparing for what’s next.
As the seasons become less predictable, looking after the habitats and land around us matters more than ever.
