What is equitable trade?
Developing countries grow and produce many different things that are sold to developed countries. These eventually end up on our supermarket shelves. From spices, fruits, coffee to chocolates.
Unfortunately, the farmer who grows the produce and takes almost all the risks very rarely gets actual price realization for their effort. They most likely receive less than 10% of what you would have paid to buy it off the supermarket shelf with the majority of the cost being shared by multiple layers of middle men and agents.
Bharani believes that farmers should receive a fair value for their produce and they should have clear equity and equality in the price of the product. We ensure the farmers we source from receive 2-3X of the market rate.
That is equitable trade!
