True Roots True Roots is a family run smallholding and market garden delivering fresh local produce to the East Lothian area.

We specialise in weekly veg boxes delivered during our growing season between June and December and lamb boxes delivered during the Autumn.

It's been a wet week here so we've needed to get wrapped up for veg picking but thankfully the veggies don't seem to bothered by the weather 😂. We have a nice crop of French beans again this week and the rainbow chard has been growing great under fleece. There are some massive pak choi to be picked which is having it's best year yet! We're loving it with so soy sauce, vinegar and sesame oil done lightly in the pan 😋. Also some more lovely East Lothian produce with Pressmennan Farm eggs and Portobello apple juice.

It's great to have the first of the cauliflower in this week! It's been great to grow and tastes lovely! We're looking forward to hearing the feedback from it. There's also some chard that's in for the first time for some more leafy greens.

We managed to get a nice crop of beans this week due to the recent decent weather but it's probably going to be the last of them as there's a definitely chill in the air now! The rocket was looking great in the polytunnel, it's a lovely peppery addition for this week. We have more wrapped up under fleece in the outside beds for cutting in the coming weeks all being well.

We have the first of the Pak Choi in this week which is looking great! It's probably the best it's ever been as usually the slugs like to sample it but no such problems this year. Maybe the the dry summer has had an affect on the slugs, we're not sure but we're very much looking forward to adding it to stir fry's and an Asian inspired salad with shredded red cabbage!

It's that time of year to pick the squash for storage. This helps them cure and develop a sweeter flavour. The harvest has been pretty good this year although some are definitely smaller than usual. We're putting it down to the long spells of dry weather. Still looking forward to cracking them open and getting some tasty curries and soups on the go!

You can definitely tell that we're moving into autumn by the contents of this weeks bag with the root veg coming to the fore! Sadly this will be the last week of the tomatoes, they'll definitely be missed! Still plenty of lovely veg to come and we've got some great East Lothian produce accompanying it in the form of Pressmennan Farm eggs and Portobello Apple Juice. .

You know it's getting into autumn when you begin to get less of the warm weather veggies in favour of those that are considered traditionally 'British'. However, the tomatoes are still hanging on in there and the weather forecast for the next week should help them along for at least another week. Some lovely fresh celery in this week along with potatoes.

New in this week we have carrots and red onions. You can definitely see the change in weather showing in the plants. Growth has slowed up along with ripening of things like tomatoes this isn't entirely surprising given that September is next week! We've started to get some of the winter greens in the ground so hears hoping for a good start to Autumn!
