Nail techs, this one is for you. 💅

Beautiful nails and a full appointment book don't automatically mean your business is profitable.

Look beyond the price of each set. Think about your product costs, how long each appointment takes, and what you actually keep.

Your skills deserve to earn you more than just a busy calendar.

Watch, share with another nail tech, and follow DataToProfits for practical business numbers.

He lost his place at the company he helped build. What he built next became his way back.

Steve Jobs's story is a reminder: a setback can cost you confidence, but it doesn't erase what you know.

Before your next move, ask:
• What should I keep?
• What should I change?
• What did this experience teach me?

Which question do you need to answer today?

You want a salon in central London. But do you really need to own one?

Sometimes what you want is the location, the opportunity and a place to serve your customers. Renting a chair in an established salon could help you start without the upfront cost of opening your own premises.

But run your numbers first. For example, a £60 service minus £15 in direct costs leaves £45 towards chair rent, other expenses and your pay. Four such appointments could cover £180 weekly chair rental — before the rest of your costs.

Your business is not the building. It's the system that helps you serve customers and earn sustainably.

Would you start with a rented chair or wait to open your own salon?

Follow DataToProfits for simple numbers and smarter business decisions.

You have empty chairs in your salon, but you're still paying rent for them.

Meanwhile, a talented beginner may be waiting until she can afford her own shop before starting.

What if you both could benefit? Salon owners can earn from unused space, while beginners can start building their businesses without the cost of opening a salon. The numbers and rental terms still need to work for both sides.

Your skill is more valuable than owning the building. Start with what you have. Grow from there.

Salon owners: would you rent out an empty chair? Beginners: would you rent a chair to get started?

You don’t always need to own a salon to run a successful beauty business.

I remember someone telling me, “If I had my own shop, customers wouldn’t price my work anyhow.”

But here’s what I think: Your skill is more valuable than the building you work in.

If you own a salon with empty chairs, someone else could be paying to use that space.

And if you’re a beginner, you don’t necessarily need thousands of pounds to start. You might only need access to the right workspace, equipment and your first few clients.

Of course, the numbers must work for both sides.

Beginners: Would you rather rent a chair or wait until you can afford your own salon?

Stylists and service business owners: your £100 service might earn you LESS per hour than your £60 service.

Here’s the maths:

£100 service − £25 products = £75 left over 3 hours → £25 per hour.

£60 service − £10 products = £50 left over 1 hour → £50 per hour.

The lower-priced service leaves twice as much per hour before other business expenses.

Your highest-priced service isn't automatically your best-paid hour.

Try this with your 3 most-booked services. What do you charge, what are your direct costs, and how long does each take?

Save this and follow DataToProfits for simple numbers that help you make better business decisions.

I had a conversation with a stylist who is always fully booked, but she couldn’t understand where the money was going.

And honestly, I’ve heard this from so many stylists.

Being fully booked and being profitable are two different things.

If you’re busy all week but still have little to show for it, start with your 3 most-booked services and ask:

What do I charge?
What does it cost me?
How long does it take?
What’s actually left?

A full calendar shows demand. It doesn’t automatically show profit.

Your booking app can show you what was booked. I’ll show you how to work out what actually made you money.

6 reasons you could be losing money as a stylist — even when you’re getting clients.

It could be:
1. The services you offer
2. The prices you charge
3. How long each service takes
4. Your costs
5. Your no-shows
6. Not knowing which services actually make you money

Being busy doesn’t automatically mean being profitable.

You might not need more clients. You might just need to understand your numbers.

Follow for simple numbers that help you make better business decisions.

Revenue looks good on paper. But profit is what actually stays with you.

Before you celebrate a busy week or a big sales number, ask: after products, fees, overheads and your time — what did I actually keep?

That number tells the real story of your business.

Save this for your next money check-in. 💜

28/09/2026

Revenue is not profit.

Money can come into your business and still not be yours to keep.

Products take their share.
The chair needs paying.
Booking fees come out.
The business has bills of its own.

Revenue is the money that walks through the door.
Profit is what stays when the bills have left.

Because a busy business isn’t always a profitable one.

Save this — and next time you look at your sales, ask yourself: how much did I actually keep?
