This week our wonderful Mama passed away. ❤️
Mama (known as Margaret or Mrs Davies) has been the heart and soul of Cuckoo Mill Farm since the very beginning.
With a keen entrepreneurial spirit, Mama started the poultry business in 1958 with just three turkeys and grew her flock from there.
Alongside farming, she ran our farmhouse bed and breakfast for over 55 years, welcoming guests from across the world and serving her famous three-course dinners from her Aga to everyone who stayed.
For more than 50 years, Mama personally took every Christmas turkey order, fed the army of helpers we rely on every single day, sold poultry at Farmers' Markets, and nothing was ever too much trouble.
Generations later, those same families are now ordering their Christmas turkey with granddaughters Emily and Beth, while grandsons Danny and Joe proudly continue the dairy enterprise that Mama and Grampy started from small beginnings all those years ago.
If you walked into the Cuckoo Mill kitchen - the phone would be ringing, mama would be chopping onions to make turkey stuffing or her famous pâté, potatoes boiling on the Aga and white coats drying from the ceiling hooks ready for the next working day.
Mama could make 10 jobs look effortless and all with a smile on her face. ❤️
Consistency was Mama's middle name.
Her strong work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to always putting the customer first were the hallmarks of her character.
You would never catch Mama complaining - even in the height of the summer holiday season or at Christmas, when the phone would be ringing off the hook.
And Mama's response, with a smile?
"It's when the phone doesn't ring - that's when we have a problem."
Mama was always so agreeable to fun…especially when we’d mention that TV and Radio crews would be filming at the farm and we’d need to interview her in the kitchen. As calm as ever, ‘Well, why not? Bring them in!’ she would say.
An inspiring, kind, and welcoming woman, she led from the front with quiet determination and always got the job done.
As we celebrate Mama's life, we will continue working to carry forward her wonderful legacy and everything she stood for. ❤️
