Time to ditch 84,000 bags*? 🛍️
We've been chatting with customers recently and have been interested to learn how many of you think we EXPECT you to take a paper bag - especially when shopping for fruit and veg. The reality couldn't be further from the truth! 🍌
🗣️ This Spring we've been conducting an ethical buying review, and one thing that's come up for our team is...packaging! Specifically, we've been thinking a lot about our duty as a business to continue challenging the use of packaging in our supply chains.
While bulk selling, compostable packaging options and other low waste solutions are in our blood, we can't ignore the stubborn single use waste we see every day. If we as staff get lost in the day-to-day shop flow and don't carve out time to question ourselves and our suppliers- will things ever change?
While we continue to offer paper bags for free, we are increasingly wondering how best to push ourselves to make lasting, impactful changes where we can. 🤔
Packaging is complex. It turns our paper bags aren't really 'better' than plastic. They use a huge amount of energy to produce, and are in the main, a single use item. ❌
While we continue to reflect, we encourage our community to observe your habits when it comes to bags. Are we going to judge you for taking a bag - absolutely not! However we don't want to shy away from shared accountability. We have to change a habit to create change.
If you're looking for a good place to start- some fruit and veg come with their own, self-made packaging! So let those bananas, garlic, and and oranges roam free baby! For other items, we've got reusable cotton bags for purchase, or you can bring any bag you fancy.
At this moment in time, we'll continue to offer our free paper bags, small charge compostable bags, and free jar/home products refill exchange.
Hope to see you soon ✌️
*Our customers (& team) have got through 84,000 paper bags in the last 12 months, the majority of which are single use.
