Old Plaw Hatch Farm

Old Plaw Hatch Farm Plaw Hatch Farm Plaw Hatch Farm is a 500 acre farm on the edge of the Ashdown Forest near Sharpthorne. We also keep some sheep, pigs and laying hens.

It has been a biodynamic farm for 40 years and is owned by a charitable trust. As tenant farmers our aim is to provide as wide a range of produce as possible, principally to the local community. Our prices reflect the true cost of food production allowing for re-investment towards the sustainability of the farm. We are a mixed farm with a dairy herd providing raw milk, cheeses, yoghurts and cream.

A garden of 12 acres provides a range of seasonally available fruit and vegetables. All this plus a lot more organic produce is available through our farm shop. The Demeter symbol on all our produce shows that we are a certified Biodynamic Farm. This means that we endeavour to run as a self-contained farm, in harmony with the world around us. We take advantage of the planetary rhythms for the planting and harvesting of all crops to enhance their vitality. Compost, biodynamic preparations and the use of green manures ensure that fertility of the land is maintained. This is nothing new! It is how people used to farm. We provide training for apprentices who want to become farmers or gardeners and host camping trips for school children. We also organise farm walks for the local community to show how the farm operates. We are always open for everyone should you wish to explore beyond the farm gate. We believe it is important that people know where their food comes from and are assured of its quality. As a customer you will be supporting the local agricultural environment and in the wider context avoid all the consequences of food miles.

The wettest start to the year that many of us can remember. The garden tunnels are full of winter veg, quietly waiting for the sun whenever it does peak through. The first sowings have been done and the daffodils are budding up.

Lambing will start in the next few weeks. It's only 35 days until the Spring Equinox, when the days will be longer than the nights. Not long now.

From tomorrow (Saturday 20th) through to Christmas Eve we will have a one way system in place, where you will be able to go on the world famous Plaw Hatch Safari. TURN LEFT when you come on to the farm. Sights include lots of cows and a pet chicken or two if you're lucky.

And a friendly reminder to drive slowly - we're Plaw Hatch, not Brands Hatch 😉 🏁

Meet Croissant 🥐 our newest dairy heifer to be born. The daughter of Crumpet, Croissant is crossed with Guernsey, known for their rich milk. (Solid name choice from the farm team too, we're sure you'll agree!) 🤍

We only have a small number of turkeys remaining to order for Christmas. Our slow-grown, organic turkeys come from local Tablehurst Farm as well as Otter Valley. With a fine flavour and succulent texture, they're some of the best birds you can find for your Christmas table.

We're very unlikely to have any left when you come to get the rest of your Christmas shopping, so do order now to avoid missing out!
