Crowther's Drinking Gravy

Crowther's Drinking Gravy I remember that during the war, when Crowther's was on ration, we'd heat up water and stir in soil and boot polish. But it wasn't the same.

As well as the garlic flavour, there was a children's gooseberry and orange cough-gravy for when we had pleuresy or brochiolismus. I remember it as a gravy temptation of hell in that I was not allowed to drink of the cups as Crowthers would refuse to supply more of their precious meat rendering or that if it was neccessary then the cost of replacement would be taken from my 3d payment for the full

painting. As both of my hands were encumbered and with the deadline so tight I had to use a pencil gripped between my teeth for the sketch and with a paint brush with one primary colour up each nostril and the third primary coloured brush screwed into my wooden eye (that I aquired during the great war) it was a vigil by candle-light to complete the work.
