ELDERFLOWER CORDIAL!

The best and easiest drink to make at home. And now is the time to do it.

It’s perfect made with either the creamy flowers of wild elder or any of the pink garden types (they make a beautiful deep rose coloured cordial).

Best to pick the flower heads as early in the morning as possible as that is when they are most fragrant.

And see the last ingredient below for the magic ingredient, always available from FoodLoose!

Ingredients:
2kg granulated sugar
1.5L water
4 unwaxed lemons
20 heads elderflowers
75g citric acid

Measure the water into a large stainless steel pan and bring to the boil. Take off the heat and stir in the sugar until dissolved. Add the cut up lemons and citric acid. Then use scissors to trim in the flowers, having checked for insects! Some small stalks don’t matter, just aim to leave out the bigger ones (see pic). Stir well and leave to steep for 24 hours, stirring again at bedtime. Strain and bottle.

Diluted with icy water this is the ultimate cold drink for hot days, but it also keeps very well in a cool place for months. Or you can bottle in plastic and freeze.

Our window display for May celebrates a few important dates for the environment - World Bee Day, falling this week, which acknowledges the role of bees and other pollinators for the environment, No Mow May, a month long conservation campaign encouraging us to let our lawns grow and flower for the good of insects, and the International Day for Biological Diversity, falling tomorrow.

As well as honey itself from , we offer a number of products containing it, including the whole range of face and body creams and the creamy and gentle Goats Milk and Honey soap from . And we wouldn’t be able to offer our delicious Humblebee apple juice without the pollinating attentions of bees and other insects,

This spring has been a pretty good one for insects and the warm weather to come should set them all a-buzzing in our gardens. So put that lawnmower away for a month and let the buttercups and daisies run riot!

We have a paid post available with working hours of 8.5 hours/week on Saturdays.

You would be in charge of the daily running of the shop, including opening and closing and supervising our volunteers.
