Phoenix – Fish Market Operative

Phoenix joined Brixham Trawler Agents in 2023 and began working on the Evening Shift, helping boats land their catch and preparing the market for sorting and grading throughout the night.

Earlier this year, Phoenix moved onto the Day Shift and is now developing his knowledge of the auction and export processes.

This additional training will enable him to provide support and cover across a range of areas within the business in the future.

It’s great to see Phoenix expanding his skills and experience within the team 👏

“The best college day ever!” 👏

That was the feedback we received from Bicton College students following their visit to The World Famous Brixham Fish Market last week 🌍🐟

The students, who are currently on a Preparing for Employment course, were keen to gain insight into different industries and career opportunities - and we hope our tour did exactly that!

There are so many careers involved in keeping the fishing industry moving, and we’re always delighted to welcome students behind the scenes, showcasing the wide range of opportunities available 🚢⚓️

A Golden Haddock at Brixham Fish Market this morning! 📸🐟

It is suggested that this unusual golden colouration may be linked to a rare genetic variation affecting the pigmentation of the fish.

➡️ For comparison, the second photo shows the typical colours of a haddock - dark grey, brown and silver!

The Fishermen's Mission in Devon are delighted to announce that with the Port Of Brixham Trawler Event CIC just days away at Brixham Fish Market, we're kicking off the weekend with something really important — a FREE health and wellbeing event for fishermen AND their families.

Evening Shift: 2pm - 10pm
Monday - Friday

📍 Location: Brixham (In Person)

➡️ Zero-hours contract for the first 3 months.
➡️ Opportunity to move to a permanent contracted position upon successful completion of your probation period.

Applicants must be aged 18 or over.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲
We are looking for a reliable and hardworking Fish Market Operative to join our team.

This role offers flexible afternoon and evening working patterns, with shift lengths varying depending on market activity.

Availability of up to five evenings per week (Monday to Friday) is required.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀
🐟 Physical manual labour required
🐟 Moving and stacking boxes
🐟 Operating the box washing machine
🐟 Assisting with unloading lorries when required
🐟 Operating a crane to land small boats (full training provided)

The box wash operation is a vital part of our business and a key responsibility of this role, ensuring all boxes are cleaned and maintained to the required standard throughout the week.

The first landing of Scottish Cod this year 🚢🐟

A species we don’t see very often on our auction in Brixham, but today we were pleased to offer Scottish Cod from the Rose of Sharon ⚓️

Currently fishing up in Scotland, this vessel is providing some fantastic-quality cod to Brixham, and we expect to see more landings over the coming weeks and months.

We’re delighted that Barry Young, Managing Director of Brixham Trawler Agents, received the James Wright Award for Inspirational Leader at the Torbay Business Awards 2026 on Friday night 🏆

Recognised for more than 30 years at Brixham Fish Market, Barry has played a key role in its growth and its position at the heart of the fishing community, alongside a strong team he proudly calls “the best in the world”.

From industry development and local charity and sponsorship support, his contribution to both business and community life has been outstanding.

A special moment was Strictly Rowcroft 2025, when Barry was crowned king of the dance floor and contributed to an event that raised over £176,000 for Rowcroft Hospice.

A very well-deserved recognition.
